Even though he admittedly wasn’t at his best, senior standout pitcher Ashton Hammonds found ways to work out of several jams and make it into the seventh inning to help the Wolfpack advance.

Hammonds, who entered the game with a remarkable 0.15 ERA, allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. His ERA is still impressive at 0.53.

“When you don’t have your best stuff, you’ve just got to throw strikes and let your defense work behind you,” said Hammonds, who improved to 10-0. “You’ve just got to find it in you.”

Whiteville (21-1) scored twice in the second inning. Junior first baseman Caleb Johnson led off with a double to left field and advanced to second base on a sacrifice fly from Grayson Creech.

An opposite-field single from freshman Wyatt Torelli allowed Johnson to cross the plate. Torelli was able to race all the way around to third base when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. He scored on a ground out from Jake Odham.

After SouthWest Edgecombe tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, Odham put the home team back in front with a base hit in the bottom of the frame that plated Johnson.

The Wolfpack pulled away for good by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth despite managing only one hit – an infield single from J.T. Todd. Jake Odham, Luke Odham, Will Fisher and Matthew Hannah all worked walks, while Hammonds reached on an error.

Todd had two of Whiteville’s seven hits, while Hammonds and Jake Odham both drove in a pair of runs.

“We talk all the time about whatever the game is calling for we’ve got to execute, and tonight the bottom of our lineup really did it early,” Wolfpack coach Turner Brown said. “Wyatt came up with a big hit and then Jake Odham came up and drove him in. That’s two young guys that are are in their first playoffs, but the moment wasn’t too big for them.”

SouthWest Edgecombe had two runners on with just one out in the second inning, but a strikeout and ground out ended the threat.

The first two batters reached in the third inning, but Hammonds was again able work out of the jam by getting a strikeout, pop out and ground out. The Cougars stranded the base loaded in the fourth.

Whiteville will be back at home Tuesday night against the winner of No. 7 Seaforth/No. 23 West Craven.

No. 8 John Paul II 9, Coastal Christian 1

Second round NCISAA 3A playoffs

Freshman Ben Andros led off the top of the sixth inning with a single to left field and scored the Centurions’ lone run on a two-out base hit from Andrew Harrison.

All three of Coastal Christian’s (6-12) hits came in the sixth. Noah Swanson followed Andros with a single of his own.

In his final high school game, Dominic Libretto worked a pair of walks. He was the hard-luck loser despite allowing only one earned run in five innings.

No. 9 East Columbus 8, No. 8 Chatham Charter 6

Second round NCHSAA 1A playoffs

After allowing six runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Gators chipped away and eventually grabbed the lead for good in the fifth.

Freshman Sara Coleman singled home Kamora Bryant to put East Columbus (18-7) on top 7-6. Skylah Collins, who worked a walk, scored an insurance run on an error.

Chynna Patrick went 2-for-4 with a walk, double, stolen base and two RBI. Coleman, Jenna King and Kaley Mitchell had two hits a piece.

Gracie Coyle pitched six shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six batters to earn the win.

Next up will be a game against the winner of No. 1 North Duplin/No. 16 Pender on Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.

Union Grove Christian 12, Wilmington Christian Academy 1 (5 innings)

Quarterfinals NCCSA 1A/2A playoffs

Peyton Hedge, Lily Montes De Oca and Ryleigh Davis all had a hit, but the young Patriots saw their season come to a close.

Montes De Oca doubled and scored on a passed ball in the top of the second inning. Eighth grader Amelia Naylor allowed only three earned runs in a complete game in the circle.

Twelve of the 13 players on the WCA (5-13) were either in middle school or underclassmen in high school.
