First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Senior goalkeeper Ryoto Sugawara made eight saves to help the Buccaneers go on the road and escape with a victory.

It was Laney’s (10-6-3) first playoff win since 2016.

Noah Williams scored off an assist from Gavin Dengate in the ninth minute to give the Buccaneers an early lead.

The advantage grew to 2-0 in the 44th minute when Dengate threaded a fantastic pass to Jaxon Rackley, who put the ball in the back of the net.

East Chapel Hill’s lone goal came with 59 seconds remaining.

Laney travels to No. 4 Apex on Thursday at 6 p.m.

No. 1 New Hanover 4, No. 32 Pine Forest 0

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Aidan Payne scored two more goals to increase his season total to 45, and the Wildcats had no trouble advancing to the second round of the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season.

Holt Rogers and Preston Lian had the other goals. Charlie Letson, Liam David, Elijah Lopes DaSilva and Cheeto Mirando all dished out an assist for New Hanover (22-0-1).

Goalkeeper Jhonny DePaz earned the clean sheet.

Next up is a home match against No. 17 Green Level on Thursday night at 6.

No.  9 Trask 4, No. 24 East Duplin 0

First round NCHSAA 2A playoffs

The Titans picked up their first postseason victory since 2011 behind a hat trick from John Roberts.

Ruben Meza scored the other goal. Moises Gonzalez finished with two assists, while Armando Romero and Nicholas Rodriguez both had one.

Goalkeeper Diego Rivera earned the clean sheet for Trask (14-3-1), which has won 12 straight matches.

The Titans visit No. 8 Roanoke Rapids at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No.  10 Pender 5, No. 23 Clover Garden 1

First round NCHSAA 1A playoffs

A hat trick from Jared Bautista sent the Patriots into the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2018.

Pender’s (10-10-1) other two goals were scored by freshman Aidan Murray. 

The Patriots will play at No. 7 Falls Lake Academy on Thursday at a time to be announced.

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

A few costly mistakes in the opening half put the Screaming Eagles in a hole they couldn’t dig out of.

Enloe earned a penalty kick in the 14th minute and Owen Henderlite easily converted it. 

Ashley (14-5) went a man down following a red card in the 21st minute. The visitors tacked on goals in the 23rd, 33rd and 73rd minutes.

No. 15 Wake Forest 2, No. 18 Hoggard 2 (Wake Forest wins 3-2 in penalty kicks)

Joao Barboza Filho scored both goals for Hoggard, but the visitors fell in a penalty kick shootout.

The match was tied at 1-all after regulation. The Vikings (9-8-2) scored in the first 10-minute overtime period, but Wake Forest evened the score with a goal in the second session.

Hoggard converted its first two attempts in the shootout to grab a 2-1 lead, but they missed on their final three.

Goalkeeper Andrew Stein had a remarkable performance by finishing with 15 saves.

Third round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Wildcats terrific season came to a heartbreaking end in one of the closest matches featuring an area team in recent history.

Four of the six singles matches went to a deciding third set tiebreaker, with the visiting Pride winning three to even the score heading into doubles.

Leesville Road picked up an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles and an 8-4 win at No. 3 to advance to the East final.

New Hanover (17-1) got impressive singles victories from freshmen Sophia Catino (6-4, 7-5 at No. 1) and Hanna Davis (6-3, 6-1 at No. 4).

Lucy Dimock rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 10-6 win at No. 3.

Leesville Road’s singles victories came from Sara Hauge (6-4, 2-6, 10-8 at No. 2), Caroline Stillwell (4-6, 6-4, 11-9 at No. 5) and Logan Nager (6-3, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 6).

Dimock and Davis picked up New Hanover’s only doubles win by a score of 8-6 at No. 2.
