BOYS BASKETBALL

Cape Fear Academy 66, Wilmington Christian Academy 46

A 14-0 run in the third quarter gave the Hurricanes a 47-26 lead and they were never tested down the stretch in the home victory.

KJ Kernan led the way with 19 points, including 11 in an opening half that saw CFA (4-1) build a 33-23 lead. Freshman Thomas Watkins finished with a career-high 14 points and Evan Marinov chipped in 10.

Derek Poe opened the second half with a 3-pointer to get WCA (0-1) within seven before the Hurricanes went on their big run that started with a 3-pointer from Jack McErlean and ended with a layup from Watkins. 

Poe led the Patriots with 13 points, while Bryce Bordeaux added nine on three 3-pointers. 

Both teams connected on six 3-pointers.

CFA is back at home on Wednesday night at 7:15 against Trinity Christian. WCA plays at Coastal Christian on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Freedom Christian Academy 48, Coastal Christian 29

Coastal Christian fell to 1-3 on the season despite getting a team-best 10 points from sophomore guard Luke Davenport.

The Centurions will try to snap a three-game losing streak on Friday at home against Wilmington Christian Academy at 7:30 p.m.

The Hurricanes scored the first 19 points of the game and continued to pull away in the dominant home victory. 

Senior Chloe Kernan drained five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 23 points. She scored 13 of CFA’s (4-1) 15 third quarter points. Elena Crvendakic chipped in eight points.

The Hurricanes led 24-1 after the opening quarter and 30-3 at halftime. CFA hosts Trinity Christian Academy on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m.

Kyra Rickard scored three points to lead WCA (0-1), which returns to action Friday at Coastal Christian at 6 p.m. 

Coastal Christian 62, Freedom Christian Academy 20

Brooke Barton scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and the Centurions assisted on 21 of 25 field goals in the dominant home win.

Coastal Christian (2-1) jumped out to a 29-1 lead after the first quarter and increased it to 50-5 at halftime. Bella Lecci finished with 10 points and Gracie Moss chipped in nine points. Maya Insley added six steals and five assists.

The Centurions are back at home Friday night against Wilmington Christian Academy at 6 p.m.

East Bladen 65, New Hanover 46

Andrehya Shuford scored a team-high 18 points despite being in foul trouble all game, but the Wildcats suffered a season-opening road loss.

New Hanover (0-1) also got 14 points from Destiny Campbell. They return to action Thursday at Purnell Swett at 6 p.m.

Whiteville 57, South Brunswick 16

The Wolfpack raced out to a 16-5 lead after the opening eight minutes and continued to pull away.

South Brunswick (0-1) was led by Summer Rainwater, who finished with nine points. She had all six of her team’s points in the second quarter. 

Next up for the Cougars is a home game against White Oak on Friday at 6 p.m.
