BOYS WRESTLING

Bulldog Invitational

at Dixon

Seven area wrestlers from four high schools claimed titles at the season-opening tournament.

Laney led the way with four champions en route to 200.5 points and the team title. 

Defending state champion Alex Hopper reached the finals at 182 pounds with back-to-back first period pins. The N.C. State signee won by injury default in the championship bout.

UNC Pembroke signee Avery Buonocore earned bonus points in all four of his victories at 145. He had a pair of first period pins and two tech fall, including a 25-10 win in the finals.

Noah Thomas made it back-to-back champions by cruising at 152. He had three pins and a win by injury default. Thomas pinned Swansboro’s Theodore Yager in 4:28 to claim the title. 

Trystan Richardson won a tough 195 bracket. He had a 7-5 decision in the semifinals before earning a 3-0 victory over Hoggard’s Pierce White in the final.

Ashley senior Ethan Files didn’t get to the second period in any of his four victories at 170, which all came via pin. He decked Holden Walker of Laney in 1:24 in the championship bout.

After securing three straight first period pins, South Brunswick’s Garrett Frazier held on for a 7-4 decision in the final at 220.

The final area champion was Hoggard heavyweight Asef Ismail, who opened with a 6-3 decision before recording three consecutive pints. He needed only 1:30 to pin Peter Hoult of SW Onslow in the final.

Beach Brawl

at West Carteret

West Brunswick had 12 place-winners, including a pair of champions, to earn the team title with 149.5 points.

Luke Connick opened with a first period pin at 126 pounds. He earned a 6-4 decision in the semifinals and then claimed the title with a 10-2 major decision over West Carteret’s Skyler Oxford, who placed sixth at last season’s 3A State Championship.

Treston Wiggins was the other Trojan to claim a title. His three pins at 182 came in 40 seconds, 11 seconds and eight seconds. 

Topsail had four wrestlers stand atop the podium – Ian Fritz (132), Ethan Blevins (145), Jack Latta (152) and Thomas Bennett (285).

Fritz received an opening round by before recording back-to-back pins.

Blevins had a pair of pins in less than 40 seconds before rolling to a 13-0 major decision in the final.

Latta’s three victories all came by pin, including a 44 second fall over West Brunswick’s Cyrus Gregory in the championship bout.

Bennett never reached the second round as all three of his pins came within the first two minutes.

The only other area champion was North Brunswick’s Brayden Post at 113. He started with a 6-2 decision before pinning his next two opponents.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Bulldog Invitational

at Dixon

South Brunswick junior Lily Prendergast (100-107 pounds) and Laney sophomore Elaina Pollock (185) captured their first titles of the young season.

Prendergast, who won the state championship a season ago, finished the day with four pins. She needed only nine seconds to finish off Laney’s Yesan Huang. 

Pollock also had four pins, including a pair in less than a minute.

A total of 10 area participants earned top-four finishes.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Farmville Central 54, No. 4 Cape Fear Academy 44

Vytas Nausedas and Saransh Padhy combined to score 23 points, and the Hurricanes put up a valiant fight against the powerhouse Jaguars.

Padhy led CFA (3-2) with 12 points, while Nasudedas chipped in 11. 

The Hurricanes, who travel to West Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. on December 1, only trailed 37-32 after three quarters.

Wake Christian Academy 78, No. 10 Southeastern Homeschool 60

The Cardinals were outscored 26-9 in the second quarter and they couldn’t rally from the 19-point halftime deficit.

Blake Batts led Southeastern Homeschool (1-2) with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Eric Nyberg shot 40 percent from the field and made all five free throw attempts en route to 13 points.

Thomas Sousa chipped in 12 points for the Cardinals, who play at Coastal Christian on Monday at 7 p.m.

Oak Forest Homeschool 71, No. 14 Wilmington Christian Academy 52

Ty Giammarino finished with 22 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists in the home loss.

WCA (0-2) also got 12 points from Trey Pierce and eight points from Eli Perez.

The Patriots made seven 3-pointers. They are back in action Tuesday night at 8 p.m. against Wayne Prep Academy at home.
