WRESTLING

Bulldog Invitational at Dixon

Four area wrestlers – two from Ashley and two from North Brunswick – captured titles at the season-opening tournament.

North Brunswick’s Hunter Campbell reached the finals at 145 pounds with a pair of pins and then had a 13-4 major decision in the finals. Teammate Bryan Aragao also had pins in his first two matches before securing the title at 182 with a 5-4 decision.

JonLuke Horne (170) and Jayln McClammy (285) were Ashley’s champs. Horne had a pin, major decision and 9-3 decision in the finals, while McClammy finished with three pins.

The Scorpions finished fifth as a team with 117.5 points and the Screaming Eagles were right behind with 101. New Hanover (65) was eighths, Trask (43) was 13th and Hoggard (22) was 14th in the 15-team field.

Rogan Heath of Trask finished second at 132 as did North Brunswick’s Yoel Del Rio at 152.

The Scorpions also got third-place finishes from Joey Panas (113) and Malik Law (120).  Ashley’s Jake Stewart (145) and Ethan Files (195) were also third.

New Hanover had three wrestlers reach the podium. Matteo Meehan (132) and Jackson Cuba (160) were both third and Riley Monteath was fourth at 170.

Viking Invitational at Union Pines

Laney opened the season with a tournament title by finishing with nine place-winners and 188.5 points.

Sophomores Mark Samuel (106 pounds) and Corey Pollock (220) along with senior Marcus Mondragon were individual champions.

Samuel received a double bye and then earned a pin to advance to the finals, where he won by a 12-5 decision. Mondragon had a pair of pins and then won in the finals by injury default. Pollock also had a pair of pins and a 4-2 decision in the championship match.

The Buccaneers also got second-place finishes from Evan Kite (120) and Seth Thomas (152). Connor Johnson (145), Devon Bell (170) and D’Jarvis Poole (182) each finished third, while Jayden Harrison was fourth at 113.

Fall Beach Brawl at West Carteret

Topsail had four champions and finished second as a team with 146.5 points.

Freshmen Ethan Blevins (106 pounds) and Alex Hopper (138) both had three pins to claim their first high school tournament titles. Ben Baker also pinned all three opponents to win at 120 and Lucas Cotto had two pins and a tech fall at 113. 

Alex Jones finished third at 220, while Daniel Arredondo (126),  Ethan Parker (152) and Tristian Allison (170) each placed fourth.

Raider Rumble at Richmond County

West Brunswick went 3-2 to finish third in the dual team tournament.

The Trojans picked up victories over Scotland County (43-33), Fairmont (53-24) and Anson, S.C. (37-36). They were defeated by Lumberton (59-13) and Richmond County (53-27). 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Chatham Homeschool 89, Southeastern Homeschool 81 (OT)

The Cardinals rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but they were outscored 21-13 in the extra session.

Sophomore guard Brantley Springer scored 18 of his team-high 25 points in the second half and overtime. Josh Moyers finished with 19 points on 9 of 14 shooting.

Southeastern Homeschool (1-4) also got 18 points from from Jayden Johnson, who went 7 of 12 from the field. The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday at home against North Wake Homeschool at 7 p.m.
