The battle between two of the top teams in the 4A East was one-sided for nearly the entire 32 minutes.

Hoggard (2-0) shot 43 percent (22 of 51) from the field and forced 15 turnovers to hand the Rams their first regular season loss since February 17, 2021.

Purnell Swett finished 25-1 a season ago, while the Vikings went 26-4.

“Purnell Swett has girls who play hard, so we just wanted to come out and set the tone early,” Hoggard coach Boubacar Aw said. “We had some lapses here and there, but I thought overall we were better today than out first game.”

A 3-pointer from Purnell Swett’s Nyla Mitchell less than three minutes into the contest gave the visitors a 3-2 lead, but it was short lived.

The Vikings responded with a 3-point from Anya Massey to jumpstart a 14-2 run that gave them a 16-5 advantage after the opening quarter.

Hoggard still led by 11 late in the third quarter before scoring on eight of nine possessions. A 3-pointer from Aaronyanda Graham increased the lead to 56-28 with 5:01 to play.

The first seven baskets during the stretch were layups.

“One of the hardest things to do is to try and convince them to be patient,” Aw said. “I’m almost 50 years old and I’m still not that patient at times. I thought at times we did a good job working our offense and looking at all the options.”

Lexi Steed led the Vikings with 12 points and six rebounds. Laney Scoggins chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Anya Massey finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.
