Four different players found the back of the net in the home victory that sent the Buccaneers into the third round for the first time since 2015.

“We came into the season with high expectations, but just took it step by step,” Laney coach John Matrisciano said. “We really enjoy being out here and being together as a team, so we’re going to keep taking each day we get to continue playing as a gift.”

The Buccaneers will be back at home on Monday against Mideastern Conference rival No. 14 New Hanover. The teams split a pair of regular season meeting with each winning at home.

It will be the first meeting between a pair of Wilmington teams in the third round or later since 2015, when Laney and New Hanover met in the East final.

Senior Cole George gave the Buccaneers (20-2-1) a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute with an easy goal. Alex Walker played a perfect chip over the Athens Drive defense that found George, who had no trouble winning a 1-on-1 matchup with the keeper.

The Jaguars converted a penalty kick five minutes later to even the score.

Will Hinshaw’s header off a corner kick from Walker in the 46th minute proved to be the game winner.

Matt Travaglia and Jackson Minneci also found the back of the net in the second half.

Goalkeeper Ben Arbogast finished with four saves.

No. 14 New Hanover 3, No. 3 Holly Springs 2 (OT)

Second round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Christian Mullins scored an Olimpico goal with less than a minute remaining in the second golden goal overtime period to keep the defending state champions alive.

New Hanover (16-4-2) evened the score at 1-all in the 53rd minute on a rebound from Chino Didier after John Franck’s shot hit the post.

Holly Springs regained the lead with 18:25 remaining, but the Wildcats found the equalizer with just under 11 minutes left in regulation on a penalty kick from David Godin.

Neither team scored in the two 10-minute overtime periods or the first five-minute golden goal period.

The Wildcats will travel to No. 11 Laney on Monday night for a third round showdown.

No. 1 Hoggard 5, No. 18 Topsail 1

Second round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Senior forward Stone Murrill found the back of the net twice to increase his area-leading goal total to 45, and the Vikings cruised at home in a battle between Mideastern Conference foes.

Hoggard (22-1-1) has now won 11 straight matches. They built a 3-0 halftime lead.

Murrill is now five goal shy of tying the school record, which was set in 1996 by Matt Cavanaugh.

Jesus Juarez, Aidan Kamaris and Martin Rivera scored the other goals. Clark Beery dished out a pair of assists, while Cooper Criss and Brady Johnson each had one.

Goalkeepers Andrew Stein and Ryan Kromke played 40 minutes a piece and combined for five saves.

The Vikings are back in the Sweet 16 for the third time in four seasons. They will host No. 8 Heritage, who advanced with a 1-0 victory over No. 24 Northern Durham, on Monday evening.

No. 3 Pender 2, No. 14 Vance Charter 0

Second round NCHSAA 1A playoffs

Hunter Bullard scored both goals in the opening half to advance to the Patriots to the third round for the first time in program history.

The NCHSAA has archived playoff brackets dating back to 1997 and no Pender team since then has ever won back-to-back playoff matches.

Bullard’s first goal came less than eight minutes into the contest off an assist from Jared Bautista.

Pender’s (18-4-1) lead doubled in the 31st minute when Bullard volleyed in a corner kick from Elvis Hernandez.

Next up for the Patriots is a home match against No. 6 North Moore on Monday evening. The Mustangs picked up a 4-2 win over No. 11 Eno River.
