No. 19 Laney 17, No. 14 Fuquay-Varina 7

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Mason Vaughan blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown early in the third quarter to lift the Buccaneers to their first playoff victory since 2016.

“The kids have bought into everything and they will run through a wall for us,” Laney coach Luke Little said. “It’s been a fun group that listens and works their butts off.”

Laney (9-2) scored first on a run from Eli Rivera, but the extra point was no good.

Fuquay-Varina scored midway through the second quarter and took a 7-6 lead into halftime.

The Buccaneers received the second half kickoff, but were forced to punt. They pinned the Bengals inside the 25-yard line and the home team went the wrong direction.

On fourth-and-21, Vaughan came untouched from the right side and easily blocked the punt. The two-point pass was successful to put the visitors up 14-7.

“The last two weeks have been as good as the defense has played all year,” Little said. “They’ve been lights out.”

Charlie Viorel added a 41-yard field goal to complete the scoring.

The Buccaneers will visit No. 3 Cleveland next Friday. The Rams picked up a 56-14 win over Chapel Hill
