Topsail senior Kaitlyn Obremski cemented her place in history by claiming a fourth consecutive Mideastern Conference title.

Obremski jumped out to an early lead after the first mile and continued to put distance between herself and the rest of the field. She crossed the finish line in 18:01.11 for the second-fastest time in the area this season. 

Obremksi also owns the fastest time of 17:52.94.

Hoggard teammates Ashlei Summers (18:39.00) and Molly Parker (18:52.56) were the next finishers.

The Vikings secured a fifth straight MEC team title by placing seven runners in the top 12.

Savannah Moore (seventh in 20:01.02), Annie Mulligan (eighth in 20:01.74), Luci Hosley (10th in 20:18.76), Samantha Keeler (11th in 20:22.69) and Sarah Martin (12th in 20:25.36) also had outstanding performances.

Laney’s Olivia Bufalini (fourth in 19:35.73), Isabella Borelli (fifth in 19:41.93) and Camryn Oates (sixth in 19:44.84) as well as Ashley’s Danner Harrison (ninth in 20:11.00) rounded out the top 10.

Mideastern Conference Championship at Long Leaf Park

The Vikings cruised to their ninth consecutive conference title by placing nine runners in the top 15.

Laney’s Daniel Kelmer edged out Hoggard’s Luke Adams by three seconds to claim the individual title. The two ran side-by-side for nearly the entire event before Kelmer pulled away at the end and crossed the finish line in an area-best time of 16:01.53.

Adams completed the course in 16:04.73. He was followed by teammate Ryan Ibarra (16:27.72).

The Vikings’ other top-10 finishes came from Benjamin DiParisi (fifth in 16:59.24), Aiden Andrews (sixth in 17:17.94), Jake Nalepa (seventh in 17:18.49) and Will Clancey (eighth in 17:19.07).

Ashley improved upon its third-place finish in 2021 thanks to solid runs from Isaiah Perry (third in 16:51.43), Bates Lancaster (ninth in 17:19.22) and Sawyer Harrison (10th in 17:19.97).

GIRLS TENNIS

Mideastern Conference 4A Tournament

Laney senior Airlie Buchter claimed the singles title, while New Hanover sophomores Sophia Catino and Hanna Davis cruised to the doubles titles.

Buchter defeated Topsail’s Grace Breeden by a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. Joining them at next week’s 4A East Regional will be New Hanover’s Bella Hocker, who earned a 6-3, 6-4 win in the third-place match.

Catino and Davis dropped only five games in three victories. They faced teammates Lucy Dimock and Elle Harmon in the championship match and came away with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. 

Hoggard’s Helen Bennington and Emily Cox won the third-place match to book their spot to regionals.

BOYS SOCCER

No. 3 New Hanover 4, No. 4 Topsail 1

John Franck scored once in each half, and the Wildcats took down the Pirates for the second time this week.

The junior midfielder increased his season goal total to 21. His first goal evened the score at 1-1 in the 31st minute.

New Hanover (12-3, 7-2 Mideastern) grabbed the lead for good three minutes later on a 50-yard free kick from Luke Carter that was placed perfectly in the top-left corner of the goal.

Jacobi Burroughs completed the scoring with 9:19 remaining in the contest.

Topsail (11-4-2, 6-3-1) got an early goal from Fisher Batts off an assist from Tanner Kelly. Goalkeeper Braedy Schuerger made saves saves.

Next up for the Wildcats is a home match against Ashley on Monday at 6 p.m. The Pirates host Hoggard at 6 p.m. Tuesday. 

No. 2 Hoggard 4, No. 5 Ashley 3

Stone Murrill calmly buried a penalty kick in the 68th minute to give the Vikings a hard-fought road win.

Hoggard (15-1-1, 7-1-1 Mideastern) scored three consecutive goals to build a 3-1 halftime lead.

Brady Johnson headed in a corner kick from Kenan Leber in the 17th minute to even the score.

Conerly Preston put the Vikings on top in the 24th minute by tapping in a loose ball off another corner kick. Murrill made it 3-1 with his first goal, which came on an 18-yard free kick.

Ashley (10-7, 4-5) battled back and evened the score on goals from Brody Deutsch (45th) and Caden Pierce (67th). Pierce hit a terrific free kick from 30-yards out that snuck just under the crossbar.

Hoggard plays at Topsail on Tuesday night at 6. The Screaming Eagles visit New Hanover at 6 p.m. Monday.

No. 6 Cape Fear Academy 2, No. 7 Coastal Christian 0

The Hurricanes completed the season sweep of their rivals and claimed their second consecutive Coastal Rivers Conference title.

Eric Dyer scored the game-winning goal in the eighth minute off an assist from Sterling Gianoplus. 

Three minutes later, Cameron Steven found the back of the net to double the lead. Curren Gaskill handed out the assist.

Goalkeeper Hunter Sanderford saved all three shots he faced to earn the clean sheet.

CFA (11-6-1, 6-0) and Coastal Christian (7-13-1, 4-2) will find out their seeds for the NCISAA 3A playoffs Sunday.

No. 1 Laney 9, No. 9 South Brunswick 0

Alex Walker scored twice to break the school record for goals in a season.

The senior forward also dished out three assists. He now has 30 goals and 17 assists this year. 

Laney (15-1-1, 9-1 Mideastern), which led 5-0 at halftime, also got two goals from Matthew Travaglia as well as a goal and an assist from Benton Tucker and Addison Woodcock. 

Cole George, Will Rehrey and Aiden Wise had the other goals. Mason Israel, Jackson Minneci and Junha Pyo each dished out an assist. 

A pair of goalkeepers – Ben Arbogast and Vaughn Wirsen – shared the clean sheet.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday night at 6. The Buccaneers host North Brunswick, while South Brunswick (4-8, 2-8) welcomes New Hanover.

VOLLEYBALL

No. 1 Ashley 3, No. 11 North Brunswick 0

(25-6, 25-14, 25-4)

The dominant victory gave Ashley its second straight Mideastern Conference title.

Marlee Cook finished with 14 assists and six kills, while Bella Cook chipped in seven kills and five digs.

Ashley (15-6, 12-2) finished with the same conference record as Hoggard, but swept the Vikings during the regular season. The Screaming Eagles will be the top seed for next week’s MEC Tournament. 

Emma Gordon put down four kills, while Kylie Jenkins served eight aces.

North Brunswick finished the regular season with an overall record of 5-17 and a league mark of 1-13.

No. 2 Hoggard 3, No. 4 New Hanover 0

(25-17, 25-14, 25-15)

Katie Ramsland hit .471 with four kills to go along with four blocks and three aces in the home sweep.

Hoggard (16-4, 12-2 Mideastern) will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s conference tournament.

New Hanover’s (13-6, 8-6) Ali Blackwell narrowly missed out on a double-double by finishing with 10 digs and nine kills. Sloane Woolwine added eight kills, seven digs and four aces. Setter Lillee Moore handed out 16 assists.

The Wildcats will be the No. 4 seed in the MEC Tournament.

No. 3 Laney 3, No. 6 Topsail 2

(25-15, 25-21, 24-26, 18-25, 15-8)

After dropping the third and fourth sets, the Buccaneers were able to regroup and escape with a road victory.

No individual stats were provided for Laney (18-3, 11-3 Mideastern), which will be seeded third at next week’s conference tournament.

Topsail (13-9, 7-7) got an outstanding performance from sophomore Ryan Lambert, who hit .426 with 26 kills, 17 digs and three blocks.

Nelly-Grace Keziah chipped in 46 assists and nine digs, while Olivia Garzelloni had 28 digs.  

No. 5 Coastal Christian 3, No. 7 Cape Fear Academy 1

(19-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-20)

Setters Maris Grant and Megan McConekey both registered double-doubles in the victory that sealed the Coastal Rivers Conference championship.

Grant finished with 11 assists and 10 digs, while McConekey had 16 assists and 12 digs. 

Elsa Southerland put down a team-best nine kills to go along with two blocks. Coastal Christian (17-13, 6-0) also got 17 digs from Samantha Harrell as well as six blocks from Chloe Carter. 

CFA (14-6, 3-2) got double-doubles from Carolina Bariglio (16 kills, 11 digs and 6 aces) and Cora Bariglio (24 assists and 17 digs). Kathryn Emmart had 18 digs and two aces, while Megan Connaughton finished with 12 digs and eight kills.

The Centurions have concluded the regular season and now await their NCISAA 3A playoff seed. The Hurricanes visit Fayetteville Academy on Friday at 5:15 p.m.
