COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

***The rankings by each area team come from the Coastal Preps Power Rankings***

FOOTBALL

No. 2 Laney 35, No. 5 New Hanover 0

Senior running back Tyjhere Crudup finished with 24 carries for 200 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Buccaneers to their most lopsided victory in the series since winning 36-0 in 2002.

It was the third consecutive week Crudup found the end zone three times. He now has 894 yards and 18 touchdowns on the season.

Over the past three games, Laney (6-2, 4-1 Mideastern) has outscored its opponents 136-7.

“I hate to say it, but I credit Hoggard a little bit,” coach Luke Little said. “They kind of woke us up, but these kids responded the way you’d want them to. Practices have been a lot better, and all the sudden they got a little more hungry.”

Both teams turned the ball over on downs on their opening possession. Laney marched 67 yards to get on the board first on a 7-yard run from Crudup late in the first quarter.

A 53-yard run from Mason Wiseman on a fake punt set up the second score, which was a 1-yard plunge from Crudup.

The lead increased to 21-0 midway though the third quarter when Kolbe Little connected with Hampton Roderick for a 14-yard touchdown.

Crudup added another 1-yard score, while Little found Joshua Quinn in the end zone from 5-yards out to complete the scoring.

Little finished 18 of 30 for 204 yards. Roderick hauled in eight catches for 138 yards.

The Buccaneers forced a pair of turnovers – an interception from Quin’sir Waddell and a fumble recovery from Jaquan Bowen.

New Hanover (4-4, 3-2) got inside the 5-yard line late in the third quarter, but failed to score. The last time the Wildcats were shut out was September 3, 2021 in a 28-0 loss to Carolina Forest, S.C.

Junior Stewart scooped up a fumble at the goal line for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter to give the Vikings a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The victory put West Columbus in sole possession of first place in the Waccamaw Conference with two games remaining.

The fumble recovery came two plays after the Vikings (7-1, 4-0) were stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line.

East Bladen (5-4, 4-1) marched down to the 9-yard line on the ensuing possession before being sent backward on a three-yard loss and a delay of game penalty.

Facing fourth-and-12 from the 17, quarterback Kewone Maynor lofted a pass toward the back of the end zone. It was hauled in by Malaki Moore, but the referees said he was out of bounds.

The Eagles’ next possession featured catches from Moore of 41 and 20 yards. Another trip inside the red zone resulted in no points following 20 yards worth of penalties.

Jahan Lesane-Powell (3 yards) and Jaylen Bellamy (51 yards) scored less than two minutes apart in the second half to increase the West Columbus lead to 21-0.

Senior kicker Ryan Strickland connected on a 26-yard field goal with 5:20 remaining to complete the Vikings’ scoring.

No. 4 Ashley 41, No. 10 South Brunswick 14

For the first time since 2007 and just the third time in program history, the Screaming Eagles reached the five-win mark.

Junior running back Jaelan Brewington had a huge night with three touchdowns.

A nice opening kickoff return from Quinn Bentley gave Ashley (5-3, 3-2 Mideastern) the ball at its own 42-yard line.

On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Tyler Carter called his own number and picked up 18 yards. That set up Brewington’s first touchdown from 40-yards out just 22 seconds into the game.

South Brunswick (2-6, 0-5) quarterback Jameson Prince tied the score with a 1-yard sneak late in the first quarter, but the Screaming Eagles responded immediately.

Brewington found a seam and raced 59 yards to the end zone two plays into the ensuing drive.

The lead grew to 21-7 at halftime on a 33-yard run from Brewington.

Ashley’s other scores came on runs from Bentley (2 yards) and Vinny Agrillo (4 yards) as well as 28-yard pass from Carter to Dominic Michelangelo.

The Cougars cut the deficit to 21-14 with 8:28 remaining in the third quarter on a 40-yard pass from Prince to Mark Bishop on fourth-and-8.

No. 1 Hoggard 45, No. 8 Topsail 0

The Vikings scored on offense, defense and special teams to cruise on the road.

Senior quarterback Hudson Wilharm had another efficient night by going 15 of 22 for 177 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown pass to Nas Session in the third quarter that increased the Hoggard (7-1, 5-0 Mideastern) lead to 31-0.

Session caught six passes for 101 yards.

The special teams touchdown came on a blocked punt from Reagan Printy that was covered in the end zone by Jaret Austin.

Late in the third quarter, junior linebacker Rylan Edwards intercepted a screen pass and returned it 23 yards for a score.

All three of the Vikings’ senior running backs – M’kel Bellamy (6 yards), Javion Joseph-Fontaine (5 yards) and Tamear Webb (1 yard) – had touchdowns.

Kicker Damian Bounds opened the scoring by connecting on a 32-yard field goal.

Topsail (4-4, 2-3) quarterback Eli Hebron finished 7 of 15 for 66 yards and a pair of interceptions.

No. 6 North Brunswick 51, No. 15 West Brunswick 13

Calvin Webb scored four rushing touchdowns in the first half, and the Scorpions bounced back nicely from last week’s loss.

North Brunswick (6-2, 3-2 Mideastern) scored 23 points in the opening quarter. The lead grew to 37-7 at halftime.

Webb opened the scoring on a 33-yard run up the middle just 43 seconds into the game. He also found the end zone on runs of 1, 57 and 20 yards.

Quarterback TT Green connected with Timoth White for a 63-yard touchdown. Chris Webb scored on a 51 yard run, while Ty Whiters returned a kickoff 81 yards for the final points.

The Scorpions also got a 32-yard field goal from Jacob Molina.

West Brunswick (0-8, 0-5) got an 84-yard interception return from Tim Collis-Miller with 5 seconds remaining in the first half. The other touchdown came on a 16-yard run from Dashaun Fullwood.

No. 11 Trask 59, No. 12 South Columbus 36

Martez Davis scored twice in the final 39 seconds of the first half, and the Titans converted both 2-point conversions to build a 32-18 lead.

Davis caught a bubble screen from Nick Bousquet and raced 80 yards down the left sideline for the go-ahead touchdown. On the final play of the second quarter, the senior found the end zone on a 12-yard run.

Trask (4-4, 1-3 Waccamaw) also got rushing touchdowns from Bousquet (3 and 2 yards), Omar Hill (6 and 20 yards) and Sherrod Henderson (58 yards).

The final touchdown of the evening came on a 40-yard pass from Bousquet to Myron Mckoy.

Demonta Gore had four rushing touchdowns and X’xavion Bellamy added one for South Columbus (3-5, 1-4).

No. 7 Whiteville 56, No. 13 Pender 6

A week after scoring 106 points, the Patriots managed only six against a talented Wolfpack defense.

Whiteville (6-2, 3-1 Waccamaw) controlled the game from the opening whistle, forcing three turnovers and building an insurmountable 35-6 halftime lead.

Nallegem Powell finished with four rushing touchdowns, while Jamal Faulk, Cameron Mckvian and Zay Bennett had one a piece.

The Wolfpack’s other touchdown came on a pass from Luke Odham to Dashaun Shipman.
