COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

GIRLS TENNIS

No. 1 Cape Fear Academy 5, No. 8 Calvary Day 0

The Hurricanes made easy work of the visitors to cruise into the semifinals, where they will host No. 4 Asheville Christian Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Lilia Wall and Tyler Beacham won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles, while CFA’s (15-2) teams of Taylor Garriott/Liza Wells (No. 1) and Gunnie Beacham/Alex Zakszeski (No. 2) dropped just one game a piece.

In singles, Zakszeski (No. 2) and Gunnie Beacham (No. 4) both had 6-0, 6-0 victories. The other four courts were not completed with the outcome decided.

NCHSAA 4A East Regional

Three New Hanover players qualified for next week’s state championship.

Seniors Lucy Dimock and Caroline Morrison secured a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Lilly Heiden and Claire Stewart of Cardinal Gibbons in the doubles semifinals before falling in the finals to Leesville Road’s Mia Caruana and Diana Higgins in the championship match.

After suffering a three-set loss in the singles semis to eventual champion Allison Harris of Broughton, Sophia Catino cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Celeste Davis of Cardinal Gibbons in the third-place match.

NCHSAA 3A East Regional

South Brunswick’s doubles team of Annie Stidham and Carys Subach finished fourth to earn a berth into next week’s state championship.

The duo opened the day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the quarterfinals before suffering back-to-back straight set defeats.

Quarterfinals NCISAA 3A playoffs

A double-double of 21 assists, 10 digs and two aces from Megan McConekey was instrumental in leading the Centurions back to the semifinals for the fifth straight season.

Fellow setter Caroline Meehan added 14 assists, seven digs and four kills, while Norah Davis put down a team-high nine kills.

Coastal Christian (26-6) also got 13 digs and six kills from Emma Anderson as well as 18 digs, five kills and two aces from Reagan Mintz.

The Centurions will host No. 3 Wake Christian Academy on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Senior outside hitter Jenny Garner hit .615 with nine kills and five digs in the most dominant victory of the season for the Vikings.

Violet Hakan finished with six kills and six aces. Hoggard (27-5) got seven kills from Addie Norman and six from Mia Elder.

Setter Megan Kelly dished out 30 assists to go along with four aces.

Next up is a second round match at home against No. 12 Green Level on Monday night. 

Southeastern Homeschool claims NCHEAC state title

After going 3-0 in pool play earlier in the day, Southeastern Homeschool swept their semifinal match before claiming a first-ever state title with a 25-13, 20-25, 25-17, 25-14 victory over Alamance Homeschool in the final.

Emily Batts, Sarah Cutler and Alana Surigao were named to the All-Tournament team. 

The same three players along with Grace Johnson, Bailey Mueller and Rebekah Smith earned All-Conference honors.  

The Cardinals finished their remarkable season with a 23-4 record.

Quarterfinals NCISAA 3A playoffs

One of the the best seasons in the past two decades came to a close with a four-set road loss.

CFA (17-9) finished with its most wins since 2000 and reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 2020.

In their final high school match, senior outside hitters Carolina Bariglio and Maggie Clucas both finished with double-doubles. Bariglio had 18 kills and 16 digs, while Clucas chipped in 12 kills and 11 digs.

Cora Bariglio handed out 18 assists and Camden Sheally had 15. Mary Ryan Campbell had a strong performance with 14 digs and three aces.

No. 13 Heritage 3, No. 20 Ashley 1

Brooke Pletcher finished with 10 kills, 11 digs, three aces and two blocks in her final high school match.

Ashley (12-12) also got nine kills and five digs from Emma Gordon as well as eight kills from Mary McCarty. Sophomore middle Vayda LeQuire had six blocks and three kills.

Shania Hunt (13 digs), Kylie Jenkins (12 digs) and Kate Johnson (11 digs) had terrific defensive performances.

Quarterfinals NCISAA 3A playoffs

Trey Ragan and Eric Dyer both scored twice, and the Hurricanes pulled away by scoring five goals after halftime. 

Ragan put home what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 26th minute off an assist from Curren Gaskill. Less than a minute later, Dyer doubled the lead by making a penalty kick.

Jonah Warshaw (48th minute), Ragan (49th), Dyer (64th), Henry Wall (68th) and Spencer Johnson (72nd) all found the back of the net in the second half.

Gaskill finished with two assists. Ethan Gatt, Brian Huang, Council Lancaster and Henry Wall all had one.

CFA (15-3) goalkeeper Will Kaplan made three saves to earn his 10th shutout of the season.

The Hurricanes will host No. 3 Greensboro Day on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
