Kelly McConekey led all hitters with 18 kills in the dominant three-set victory that sent the Centurions back to the semifinals for a third straight season.

Coastal Christian (30-2) is still searching for its first trip to the state championship match after falling on the road each of the past two years.

They will get to play at home this time around against No. 4 High Point Christian Academy on Tuesday at a time to be announced. 

“They’ve just got to believe in themselves every point and not continue to wear any mistakes they might make,” Coastal Christian coach Dudley Raye said about overcoming the semifinal hurdle. “Regardless of who we play the next two rounds, there isn’t time to question yourself or get down on yourself. We have seven seniors who know that and they pick the others up so well.” 

The Centurions had a terrific serving night. They finished with 17 aces and only nine service errors.

Sophomore Samantha Harrell served six aces during a remarkable 13-point run early in the third set that gave Coastal Christian a 14-0 lead.

Maris Grant finished with 14 assists, while Kora Beth Witzenman chipped in 12 assists and four aces. Freshman Elsa Southerland had four kills.

The Centurions won the opening point of the match on a kill from Witzenman and never trailed in the first set, which ended on a kill from middle Lydia Pate.

Asheville School capitalized on some miscues in the second set to build a 14-11 lead, but the home team responded with a 9-1 run to take control.

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Arizona State commit Annalyse Askew put down a team-high 10 kills to go along with 16 digs and three aces in the sweep.

Ashley (19-6) was the only area team to advance to to the second round of the NCHSAA playoffs. They will host No. 24 Wake Forest on Tuesday night at a time to be announced.

Savannah Cook also had a double-double with 13 assists, 11 digs, six kills and two aces. Her younger sisters – Marlee (11 assists, six kills, five digs, two aces and two blocks) and Bella (5 kills and two blocks) – had outstanding performances.

Elizabeth Claire Toomer and Bella Josey each finished with nine digs, while Brooke Pletcher chipped in four blocks and two kills.

Laney finished its terrific season with a record of 14-9.

No. 5 Gray’s Creek 3, No. 28 New Hanover 1

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Sarah Collins finished with a double-double of 10 kills and 14 digs in her final high school match.

New Hanover (11-9) got a team-high 13 kills from Ali Blackwell as well as five kills and three blocks from middle Kalia Siu.

Mary Moore added 14 assists, nine kills, eight digs and two aces. Sophomore Lillee Moore registered a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs.

BOYS SOCCER

No. 1 Cape Fear Academy 4, Carolina Day School 3 (OT)

The top-seeded Hurricanes rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit to pick up one of the most exciting victories in school history and advance to the semifinals for the third time in four years.

CFA (16-3) still trailed 3-2 late in the second half before Jeb Losch scored off an assist from Luis Alvarez with seven seconds remaining to send the match to overtime.

Henry Steven put home the game-winning in the 82nd minute off an assist from Cameron Steven.

Cameron Arne (29th minute) and Cameron Steven (41st) also found the back of the net. Curren Gaskill handed out the assist on Arne’s goal.

Goalkeeper Hunter Sanderford made four saves.

The Hurricanes will host rival Coastal Christian on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the semifinals.

No. 3 Coastal Christian 2, No. 5 Grace Christian School 1 (OT)

Arturo Marin scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute to send the Centurions back to the semifinals for a remarkable sixth straight season.

Coastal Christian (12-9-1) had plenty of opportunities to score in regulation, but couldn’t covert. 

Josiah Davis put home the first goal off a corner kick from Owen Desmond four minutes into overtime, but Grace Christian School answered three minutes later.

Marin’s goal came off a cross from Will Borges. 

Now, the Centurions will play at rival Cape Fear Academy at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday with a berth in the state championship on the line.

GIRLS TENNIS

No. 2 Cape Fear Academy 5, No. 7 Carolina Day School 0

Quarterfinals NCISAA 3A playoffs

The Hurricanes had no trouble advancing to their ninth consecutive semifinal.

Tyler Beacham and Elle Harmon put the first point on the board with a dominant 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles. CFA (12-2) got an 8-4 win from Julia Johnston and Taylor Garriott at No. 1 as well as an 8-3 win from Liza Wells and Blythe Crocker at No. 2 to build a commanding 3-0 lead.

Isabel Bellamy didn’t drop a game in two sets at No. 6 singles, while Beacham cruised to a victory by a score of 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5.

Next up for the Hurricanes is a home match against No. 3 St. David’s School on Tuesday at 2:15 p.m.

4A East Regional

at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh

Sophia Catino and Sara Frances Butler of New Hanover finished in third place after picking up a 7-6(1), 6-1 victory over Hoggard’s Elena Berg and Margaret O’Malley.

Both area teams suffered straight set loses in the semifinals earlier in the day. They will compete in the 4A State Championship next weekend back at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh.

3A East Regional

at North Carolina Wesleyan

North Brunswick senior Sabrina Achki finished as the singles runner-up and South Brunswick senior Sarah Subach placed third.

Achki became the first player in school history to reach a regional final.

South Brunswick’s doubles team of Annie Stidham and Allie Hicks fell in the semifinals before bouncing back to claim third place.

All four players will compete in the 3A State Championship next weekend at Burlington Tennis Center.
