GIRLS GOLF

NCHSAA 3A East Regional

at Wedgewood Golf Course in Wilson (Par 72)

For the second year in a row, South Brunswick senior Jillian Fatkin tied for medalist honors at the 3A East Regional.

After making the turn at 1-over-par, Fatkin made three birdies and six pars on the back nine to finish with a 2-under 70. 

Teammate Lilly Powell also qualified for next week’s 3A State Championship by placing fourth with a 77. Both of Powell’s birdies came on the back nine.

The Cougars nearly advanced as a team after shooting 254, but ended up two strokes behind third-place Croatan. South Central claimed the team title with a 237.

Fatkin and Powell will compete in the two-day state championship event, which will take place at Foxfire Resort on Oct. 30-31. 

NCHSAA 4A East Regional

at Emerald Golf Club in New Bern (Par 72)

Hoggard repeated as regional champions by finishing with a team score of 230.

Junior standout Ellie Hildreth cruised to the individual victory with a round of 3-under-par. Her 69 featured five birdies, including three on the back nine.

Second-place finishers Mary Elizabeth Harrison of Cardinal Gibbons and Taylor Black of D.H. Conley were six strokes back.

The Vikings also got excellent performances from Grace Caudill, who tied for fourth with a 76, and Madison Fankboner, who carded an 85 to place 15th.

Kayla Statile (88) and Sarah Johnson (102) will also be heading to next week’s 4A State Championship, which will be held at Pinehurst No. 6.

Ashley’s Sarah Enright finished tied for 10th after shooting 80, while Laney got an 86 from MK O’Malley and an 88 from Karly Woodall. Topsail was led by Morgan Augustine’s 88 and Lillian Swann’s 89.

All five players earned individual berths to the state championship.

BOYS SOCCER

No. 1 Hoggard 8, No. 10 West Brunswick 0

The Vikings clinched their second consecutive Mideastern Conference title with a 13th shutout victory of the season.

Jalen Criss finished with two goals and one assist, while Jack-Henry James and Garrett Slocum both scored twice.

Hoggard (17-2-1, 12-1) also got one goal and one assist from Jesus Juarez and Dylan Lewis. 

Cash Foster, Finn Lambe, Johnny Morello and Conerly Preston handed out one assist a piece.

Both teams conclude the regular season at home on Wednesday night at 6. The Vikings welcome New Hanover, while West Brunswick (5-13-0, 2-11-0) hosts South Brunswick.

No. 7 Topsail 1, No. 8 North Brunswick 0

Benjamin Moore headed in a corner kick from Tully Dugan midway through the second half for the game’s lone goal.

Topsail (9-11-3, 7-5-1 Mideastern) goalkeeper Jameson Huff earned the clean sheet by making two saves.

The Pirates host Laney at 6 p.m. Wednesday, while North Brunswick (8-12-0, 3-10-0) welcomes Ashley on Wednesday night at 6.

No. 2 Ashley 3, No. 5 New Hanover 0

Standout sophomore Cameron Berry scored two goals and added an assist to guide the Screaming Eagles to an impressive road win.

Berry now has six goals and 19 assists on the season. Ashley’s (16-3-2, 10-2-1 Mideastern) other goal came off the foot of Aidan Lawrence.

Nick Cenatiempo finished with two assists. Goalkeepers Jackson Acker and Dallas Story each played one half to share the clean sheet.

The Screaming Eagles will look to pick up their 17th victory for the first time since 2017 when they play at North Brunswick on Wednesday at 6 p.m. New Hanover (9-8-3, 8-3-2) visits Hoggard at 6 p.m. Wednesday. 

No. 3 Laney 5, No. 14 South Brunswick 0

The Buccaneers scored all five goals in the second half to complete the season sweep.

Max Cribbin scored twice, while Hudson Kantrowitz finished with one goal and one asssist.

The other Laney (11-7-2, 8-3-2 Mideastern) goals came from Junha Pyo and Landon Reese. Fisher Minneci dished out an assist. 

Goalkeeper Jackson Stinson-Fullerton stopped the only shot he faced to preserve the shutout. 

The Buccaneers play at Topsail on Wednesday at 6 p.m., while South Brunswick (1-15-0, 0-13-0) concludes its season with a road match at West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 9 Pender 2, No. 12 Trask 1

The Patriots finished unbeaten in the Waccamaw Conference for the second consecutive season thanks to a hard-fought road win over their rival.

Hunter Bullard assisted on both of Pender’s (14-5-0, 12-0-0) goals, which were scored by Elvis Hernandez and Aidan Murray.

Trask (11-10-1, 8-3-0) got a late goal from Myron Mckoy off an assist from Nicholas Rodriguez. Goalkeeper Peter Sandoval made nine saves.

The Patriots will now await their seed and first-round opponent for the upcoming 1A playoffs, while the Titans wrap up their regular season with a home match against East Bladen on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS TENNIS

No. 1 New Hanover 8, No. 16 Jordan 1

Second round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Senior Elle Harmon rallied for a 6-7(3), 6-1, 10-1 victory at No. 4 singles to help the Wildcats advance to the third round.

New Hanover (22-0) took five of the six singles courts to clinch the match.

Hanna Davis (6-2, 6-1 at No. 2), Lucy Dimock (7-5, 6-1 at No. 3), Elizabeth Sifly (6-0, 6-0 at No. 5) and Caroline Morrison (6-3, 6-1 at No. 6) added the other points.

Harmon and Sifly didn’t drop a game at No. 3 doubles. The other two teams – Davis/Sophia Catino (8-3 at No. 1) and Dimock/Morrison (8-4 at No. 2) – were victorious as well.

The Wildcats will be back at home Wednesday at 4 p.m. against the winner of No. 24 Wake Forest/No. 25 D.H. Conley.
