Sisters Savannah and Marlee Cook nearly recorded triple-doubles in the sweep that advanced the Screaming Eagles into the third round for the first time since 2018.

Savannah finished with 13 assists, 13 digs, nine kills and three aces, while Marlee had 13 assists, nine kills and nine digs.

Ashley (18-6) also got 11 digs and two aces from Bella Josey as well as two blocks a piece from Mary McCarty and Brooke Pletcher.

Freshman Bella Cook put down six kills, while Annalyse Askew chipped in seven digs, four kills and four aces.

Next up for the Screaming Eagles is a trip to No. 1 D.H. Conley on Thursday at 6 p.m.

NCHSAA 4A State Championship

at Pinehurst No. 5

In her first trip the state championship, Hoggard freshman Ellie Hildreth finished in fifth place with a two-day total of 146.

Hildreth opened with a 5-under-par 67 on Monday, but finished with a 79 in the second round. 

Senior Morgan Ketchum of Reagan broke the state championship record with a 7-under 65 to win the individual title by four strokes.

Hoggard was 10th in the 12-team field. Grace Caudill had a second round 91 to finish tied for 57th. Fellow sophomore Kayla Statile shot 104.

Eliza Fogleman of Topsail placed 56th after carding an 89. Laney’s Karly Woodall recorded her second straight 95, while teammate Mary Katherine O’Malley shot 100.

NCHSAA 3A State Championship

at Foxfire Resort & Golf Club

Sophomore Jillian Fatkin of South Brunswick finished third with a two-day total of 157 on the challenging course.

Fatkin had a 77 in the first round and an 80 on the final day. 

Eastern Alamance junior Emily Matthews shot a 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday to finish at even and earn a lopsided 12-stroke victory.

South Brunswick freshman Lillian Powell improved by eight strokes with a 96 to finish tied for 43rd.

No. 2 Cape Fear Academy 5, No. 3 St. David’s School 1

The Hurricanes are headed back to the state championship match for a second straight season following a dominant home victory.

Tyler Beacham and Elle Harmon put the first point on the board with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Taylor Garriott and Julia Johnston trailed 8-7 at No. 1 doubles before earning a break to force a tiebreaker, which they won 7-3.

Harmon and Beacham also picked up singles victories at No. 4 and 5, respectively. Harmon won by a score of 6-2, 6-0 and Beacham dropped only two games in each set.

CFA (13-2) also got a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 from Isabel Bellamy. 

They will travel to No. 1 Arendell Parrott Academy on Saturday at 10 a.m. 

The teams met on September 13 with Arendell Parrott Academy coming out on top with a 5-4 victory. 

No. 2 New Hanover 7, No. 10 Cardinal Gibbons 2

Freshmen Sophia Catino and Hanna Davis cruised to dominant singles wins to help keep the Wildcats unbeaten.

Catino lost only two games at No. 1, while Davis dropped only one at No. 4. Sara Frances Butler (6-4, 6-2 at No. 2) and Caroline Morrison (6-3, 6-4 at No. 5) were also victorious.

Lucy Dimock had the other singles win for New Hanover (17-0) by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 at No. 3.

In doubles, the teams of Catino/Butler (No. 1) and Dimock/Morrison (No. 2) had identical 6-1 victories.

The Wildcats will host No. 3 Leesville Road on Monday at 4 p.m.
