NCISAA 3A State Championship match

The Hurricanes capped a dominant postseason run with their third consecutive state title.

In three victories, top-seeded Cape Fear Academy (17-2) didn’t lose a court. On Saturday, the team jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles.

The No. 3 team of Tyler Beacham and Lilia Wall got the first point with an 8-1 victory. Alex Zakszeski and Gunnie Beacham won 8-4 at No. 2, while Taylor Garriott and Liza Wells prevailed by a score of 8-6 at No. 1.

Zakszeski cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles before Gunnie Beacham clinched the title with her 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4.

NCHSAA 4A State Championship

New Hanover junior Sophia Catino suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Samantha Slowik of Jordan in the singles semifinals.

Catino picked up a pair of victories on Friday to become the second Wildcat to reach the semifinals in the past three years, joining Peyton Philemon (2021).

Slowik finished as the runner-up for the second consecutive season after falling by a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 to Broughton senior Allison Harris.

NCHSAA 4A East Regional

at WakeMed Soccer Complex

Hoggard claimed the team title in easy fashion by placing all five scoring runners inside the top 20.

Sophomore Aedon Schroeder ran a personal-best time of 15:48.96 to finish as the runner-up behind Noah Valyo of Athens Drive (15:22.45). 

Luke Adams placed fifth in 16:03.16, Pierson Guerrant was seventh in 16:07.60, Gabriel Archibald finished eighth in 16:10.61 and Ryan Ibarra was 16th in 16:34.07.

The Vikings finished with 38 points, while defending regional champion Broughton was second with 77 points.

Laney also qualified for next week’s state championship by finishing sixth with 182 points. Leading the way for the Buccaneers were Daniel Kelmer (third in 15:52.37) and Lukas Malek (19th in 16:41.68).

Topsail’s Owen Reece (11th in 16:21.29) and Ashley’s Dylan Park (20th in 16:43.79) advanced to states as individuals.

A pair of area runners qualified for next week’s state championship as individuals.

West Brunswick’s Bryson Hollis crossed the finish line 10th with a time of 17:14.44, while Anderson Metty of North Brunswick was 21st in 17:53.06.

Trask senior Kyle Moore placed 20th by completing the course in 18:02.64, but he narrowly missed out on advancing to the state championship.

The top seven runners on non-qualifying teams move on as individuals and Moore was eighth.

Teammate Derek Lopez Santiago followed directly behind with a time of 18:09.65.

Aidan Murray was Pender’s only participant and he finished in 25th place with a time of 20:04.86.

Murray, who is also a soccer standout, will now turn his attention fully to the pitch. The eight-sedded Patriots open the 1A playoffs at home against No. 25 Ascend Leadership on Monday evening.

In her final regional competition, Hoggard senior Ashlei Summers finished as the runner-up after completing the course in 18:00.94.

Her performance helped the Vikings place second as a team with 60 points. Cardinal Gibbons claimed the title with an impressive 28 points.

The other counting times from Hoggard came from Mia Medlin (fifth in 18:37.54), Annie Mulligan (15th in 19:30.16), Catalina Veldwijk (18th in 19:39.57) and Elise Hunneyman (20th in 19:50.21).

Laney scored 179 points to finish in fifth place and earn a berth to next week’s state championship. The Buccaneers’ top performance came from Camryn Oates, who was 27th with a time of 20:21.65.

South Brunswick senior Ellie Harrington booked her spot in next week’s state championship by completing the course in 20:54.89, which was good enough to give her a 14th-place finish.

Freshman Valery Trevino of Pender crossed the finish line eighth with a time of 23:14.64 to earn a berth into next week’s state championship.

She was the lone Patriot to compete in the meet.

NCISAA 3A State Championship match

Another remarkable season for the Hurricanes came to a close with a heartbreaking loss in the championship match.

Calvary Day scored the game’s only goal on a corner kick in the 11th minute. 

CFA (16-4) played a man down for the final 41 minutes after receiving a red card. Sophomore goalkeeper Will Kaplan finished with four saves. 

The Hurricanes graduate seven seniors – Ben Scoutelas, Sterling Gianoplus, Grant Peebles, Eric Dyer, Jacob Borstad, Logan Rogers and Spencer Johnson.

VOLLEYBALL

No. 1 West Union Grove Christian 3, No. 1 East Wilmington Christian Academy 1

NCCSA 2A State Championship match at Alamance Christian

After claiming back-to-back four-set victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals, the Patriots were on the opposite outcome in the championship match.

WCA (12-13) finished with 70 digs, including a team-high 17 from Caroline Prease. Grace Dodd added 12 digs, five kills and three blocks, while Natalie Cook had 11 digs.

Katelyn McCurry put down 11 kills to go along with three blocks. Kaylie Naki chipped in seven kills. Setter Georgia Taydus narrowly missed out on a double-double by finishing with 19 assists and eight digs. 

Only two seniors – Grace Wicks and Sofia Shelton – graduate, so the Patriots should be in the hunt for a title against next fall.
