GIRLS TENNIS

No. 1 Cape Fear Academy 5, No. 2 Asheville School 3

NCISAA 3A State Championship match

Senior Isabel Bellamy’s 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles clinch the match and gave the Hurricanes their second straight state title.

CFA (17-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead following an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles from Bellamy and Tyler Beacham.

Asheville School (15-2) was victorious at No. 1 to even the match score. Gunnie Beacham and Alex Zakszeski trailed 4-1 before rallying for a hard-fought 8-6 win at No. 2 to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead.

Gunnie Beacham cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles. Taylor Garriott’s 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 secured CFA’s fourth point.

That set the stage for Bellamy’s match-clinching victory, which gave the Hurricanes their seventh state title in program history. 

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

4A East Regional

Hoggard finished one point behind champion Broughton thanks to stellar performances from its top five runners.

Luke Adams crossed the finish line fourth with a time of 15:59.22, which is the fastest in the area this season. 

Ryan Ibarra was seventh in 16:09.83, while Benjamin DiParisi placed 13th in 16:30.15.

The Vikings’ other counting scores came from Jake Nalepa (21st in 16:45.29) and Pierson Guerrant (22nd in 16:46.55).

Hoggard scored 67 points. Ashley was seventh with 233, Laney placed eighth with 285, Topsail finished 12th with 362 and New Hanover was 18 with 484.

Laney’s Daniel Kelmer (14th in 16:31.88) and Ashley’s Isaiah Perry (27th in 16:52.39) qualified for next week’s state championship as  individuals.

3A East Regional

West Brunswick senior Henry Smith was the top area finisher in 12th place with a time of 17:00.29.

Smith was one of four area competitors to earn an individual berth to next week’s state championship. He will be joined by teammate Ethan Cameron, who was 17th in 17:27.85.

North Brunswick’s Anderson Metty placed 15th in 17:24.57, while South Brunswick’s Colton Gondek was 19th in 17:29.53.

West Brunswick finished sixth as a team with a score of 190, but only the top four schools earned a berth to states.

2A Mideast Regional

Trask junior Kyle Moore outsprinted two teammates for the final individual spot at next week’s state championship.

Moore finished 29th in 19:01.90. Derek Lopez was right behind with a time of 19:02.29, while Martin Lopez crossed the finish line in 19:03.56.

The Titans narrowly missed qualifying as a team. They were fifth with 152 points. Research Triangle scored 129 points to grab the fourth and final spot.

1A Mideast Regional

Pender finished fourth as a team to qualify for next week’s state championship.

The Patriots were led by sophomore Carter Brown’s eighth-place finish in 18:39.62. Aidan Murray placed 13th in 19:17.27.

Judah Summers (34th in 20:06.57), Austin Anderson (42nd in 20:39.01) and Luis Garcia Santos (51st in 21:02.57) had the other counting scores.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

4A East Regional

Three area runners finished in the top five, while Hoggard and Laney both qualified for the state championship as a team.

Topsail senior Kaitlyn Obremski was the runner-up with a time of 18:14.76.  

Ashlei Summers (fourth in 18:39.88) and Molly Parker (fifth in 18:56.40) were Hoggard’s top finishers. The Vikings also counted scores from Annie Mulligan (21st in 20:00.57), Savannah Moore (27th in 20:16.61) and Samantha Keeler (28th in 20:19.63).

Hoggard scored 83 points to finish second behind Cardinal Gibbons (27 points). 

Laney was fifth with 138 points. They were led by Isabella Borelli (18th in 19:56.55) and Camryn Oates (19th in 19:58.70).

MK O’Malley (29th in 20:24.05), Addison Shepherd (37th in 20:44.84) and Ella Warren (38th in 20:45.11) also had strong performances.

Ashley placed 10th with 294 points, Topsail was 12th with 313 and New Hanover was 20th with 553.

Freshman Danner Harrison of Ashley finished 12th with a time of 19:38.16. She qualified for next week’s state championship as an individual.

3A East Regional

The only area runner to qualify for next week’s state championship was junior Ellie Harrington of South Brunswick.

She completed the course in 19:33.24 to earn a seventh-place finish.

2A Mideast Regional

Sophomore Jayden Hoffman of Trask finished 25th with a time of 24:01.16 to earn a spot in next week’s state championship meet.

The Titans finished sixth as a team with 164 points.
