COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

BOYS SOCCER

No. 3 Laney 3, Topsail 2 (OT)

Josue Velasquez scored on a shot just inside the far post in the final second of overtime to give the Buccaneers a dramatic home win. 

Owen Hurley had the assist. 

Laney (7-5-2, 4-1-2 Mideastern) got first half goals from Max Cribbin (assist from Max Hager) and Addison Woodcock (assist from Mason Israel).  

Goalkeeper Jackson Stinson-Fullerton had an excellent performance with 12 saves.

Topsail (6-9-2, 4-3-0) sent the match to overtime thanks to second half goals from Fisher Batts and Tully Dugan. 

Dugan and Tyler McVey both dished out an assist, while goalkeeper Ben Drumm made nine saves. 

The Buccaneers play at West Brunswick on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Pirates host South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 1 Hoggard 3, No. 6 New Hanover 0 (OT)

After playing a scoreless 80 minutes, the Vikings found the back of the net three times in the first 10-minute overtime period to secure the road victory.

Jesus Juarez put home the game winner in the 85th minute. A minute later, Dylan Lewis tacked on the second goal by curling in a 25-yard free kick. 

Hoggard (12-1-1, 7-0-0 Mideastern) also got one goal and one assist from Jack-Henry James. 

Goalkeeper Ryan Kromke preserved the shutout by making four saves.

The Vikings host Ashley at 6 p.m. Thursday. New Hanover (6-6-2, 4-2-1) is back at home against North Brunswick on Thursday night at 6.

No. 2 Ashley 5, No.  9 North Brunswick 0

Cameron Berry scored a goal and added an assist for the victorious Screaming Eagles. 

Ashley (10-3-2, 4-2-1 Mideastern) goalkeepers Jackson Acker and Carson Mariott split time to share the clean sheet.

Nick Cenatiempo, Kingston Hroncich, Grant Ruscetti and Luke Tierney also found the back of the net. 

Josh Jernigan dished out a pair of assists, while Brady McCormick and Chris Wirtz each finished with one.

The Screaming Eagles play at Hoggard on Thursday at 6 p.m. North Brunswick (6-8-0, 1-6-0) travels to New Hanover at 6 p.m. Thursday.

West Brunswick 3, South Brunswick 0

The Trojans secured a shutout victory over their county rival thanks to goals from Osler Aguilar, Hunter Lofland and Derek Rivera.

West Brunswick (5-7-0, 2-5-0 Mideastern) welcomes Laney on Thursday night at 6. South Brunswick (1-9-0, 0-7-0) travels to Topsail at 6 p.m. Thursday. 

No. 4 Coastal Christian 4, Greenfield School 0

Goals from Luke Burton, Zane Finley, John Kruger and Brody Wilson lifted the Centurions to their second victory in as many days. 

Coastal Christian (9-6, 8-1 CPIC) goalkeepers Will Santaniello and Ben Lampman combined for five saves to share the clean sheet.

The only assist was handed out by sophomore defender Jackson Baker.

Next up for the Centurions is a road match at Wilmington Christian Academy on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Wilmington Christian Academy 7, Bethel Christian Academy 1

The Patriots scored four goals in the opening half to build an insurmountable lead.

Junior Jake Errett finished with two goals and one assist. Alex Taylor scored twice, while Levi Lancaster had one goal and one assist. 

WCA (8-4-0, 5-2-0 NCCSA 2A District 4) also one goal a piece from freshmen Aiden McDonough and Harrison Skinner.

Michael Roberts dished out a pair of assists. Matthew Schultz, Peter Streit and Keegan Tighe all finished with one.

Goalkeeper Calloway Upchurch made three saves in his 73 minutes. 

The Patriots visit Wilson Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 17 Wilmington Christian Academy 3, Bethel Christian Academy 0

The Patriots served 19 aces, including a team-high five from Emma Johnson and Georgia Taydus, to secure a conference win.

Taydus dished out 13 assists and added four digs. Caroline Prease chipped in 13 digs and four aces, while Katelyn McCurry put down nine kills. 

WCA (5-11, 4-0 NCCSA 2A District 4) plays at Wilson Christian Academy at 6 p.m. Friday.

No. 8 Cape Fear Academy 3, Arendell Parrott Academy 1 

(25-16, 25-22, 20-25, 25-17)

Maggie Clucas hit .430 with a team-high 20 kills, 21 digs and two aces in the win that gave the Hurricanes sole possession of second place in the Coastal Plain Independent Conference.

Fellow senior outside hitter Carolina Bariglio also had a double-double with 20 digs, 16 kills, four aces and two blocks. 

Setters Cora Bariglio and Camden Sheally combined for 32 assists, while Mary Ryan Campbell chipped in five aces.

CFA (15-6, 6-1 CPIC) travels to Coastal Christian on Thursday night at 5:45. 

No. 1 Hoggard 3, No. 4 Topsail 1

(11-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18)

A double-double of 39 assists and 11 digs from senior setter Megan Kelly gave the Vikings a road victory that assured them at least a share of the Mideastern Conference title.

Hoggard (13-2, 11-0) has a three-game lead over Ashley, Laney and Topsail with three games remaining. 

Addie Norman hit .273 with a team-high 11 kills, while Mia Elder put down 10. Ella Wadsworth finished with 10 digs. 

The Vikings host Ashley at 6 p.m. Thursday, while Topsail (12-5, 8-3) travels to South Brunswick on Thursday evening at 6.

No. 10 New Hanover 3, No. 16 North Brunswick 1

(25-19, 13-25, 25-22, 25-15)

Senior Kaitlin Goggin and sophomore Maddie Sawyer both put down 15 kills to help the Wildcats avenge an earlier-season loss.

New Hanover (6-12, 2-9 Mideastern) served 10 aces, including four from Sawyer. Setter Lillee Moore finished with 36 assists and 11 digs, while Brianna Stanley added 11 digs and Goggin had nine.

Both teams return to action Thursday at 6 p.m. The Wildcats welcomes Laney, while North Brunswick (1-15, 1-10) travels to West Brunswick.

GIRLS TENNIS

Laney 5, South Brunswick 4

After splitting six singles matches, the Buccaneers earned identical 8-3 victories at No. 1 and 2 doubles to prevail at home.

Ava Broadwell and Analise Garner played No. 1, while Laurryen Lennon and Avery Ward had win the win at No. 2.

In singles, Laney (10-3, 9-3 Mideastern) got a hard-fought 7-6(5), 7-6(5) victory at No. 6 from Marlie Linkner. The other points came from Broadwell (6-4, 6-3 at No. 2) and Garner (6-0, 6-2 at No. 3).

South Brunswick’s (8-8, 5-7) singles wins came from Carys Subach (6-1, 6-3 at No. 1), Ashley Subach (3-6, 7-5, 10-3 at No. 4) and Marie Dean (7-5, 6-2 at No. 5).

The team of Dean/Laney Soles had an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Both teams play Thursday at 4 p.m. The Buccaneers play at New Hanover, while the Cougars host Topsail.

Hoggard 7, Topsail 2

The Vikings won third-set tiebreakers on three singles courts to complete the season sweep.

Hailey Schreiber rallied for an 0-6, 6-2, 13-11 win at No. 1. Kathryn Hildreth prevailed by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 at No. 3, while Kris Foster held on for a 6-2, 1-6, 11-9 win at No. 6.

Hoggard (11-2, 10-1 Mideastern) also got points from Helen Bennington (6-2, 6-2 at No. 2), Lucy Boswell (6-3, 6-2 at No. 4) and Kate Bennington (6-1, 6-3 at No. 5).

The No. 2 doubles team of Hildreth/Boswell won by a score of 6-2 in a match that was suspended due to darkness.

Topsail (8-5, 7-5) got victories from the doubles teams of Kendall Mills/Karli Hartman (8-2 at No. 1) and Georgia Ford/Virginia Breeden (8-4 at No. 3).

The Vikings host Ashley on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Pirates travel to South Brunswick at 4 p.m. Thursday. 

New Hanover 9, North Brunswick 0

Emma Bodeman (No. 3), Lane McCorkle (No. 4) and Mary Grace Anderson (No. 6) all cruised to 6-1, 6-0 wins in the sweep.

New Hanover (17-0, 12-0 Mideastern) also got straight set victories from Corrina Bosta (6-2, 6-1 at No. 1), Dare Turner (6-3, 6-2 at No. 2) and Carrington Benton (6-4, 6-3 at No. 5). 

The doubles teams of Bodeman/Benton (No. 2) and McCorkle/Ann Brady (No. 3) both had 8-3 scores. Bosta and Turner teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1.

Next up for the Wildcats is a home match against Laney at 4 p.m. Thursday. North Brunswick (0-13, 0-11) travels to West Brunswick on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Cape Fear Academy 9, Epiphany School 0

The Hurricanes rolled to their ninth consecutive victory.

Liza Wells and Olivia Hollingsworth had 8-0 singles victories at No. 2 and 4, respectively. Alex Zakszeski (No. 1), Lilia Wall (No. 5) and Ava Mason (No. 6) each dropped just one game, while Gunnie Beacham had a score of 8-3 at No. 3.

In doubles, Zakszeski and Wells had an 8-0 victory. The teams of Hollingsworth/Wall (8-2 at No. 2) and Mason/Claire Furmidge (8-1 at No. 3) registered the other points.

Next up for CFA (11-1, 9-0 CPIC) a home match against Wayne Country Day at 4 p.m. Thursday. 

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Cape Fear Academy 21, Southeastern Homeschool 47, Wilmington Christian Academy no score

at Poplar Grove Plantation

Cape Fear Academy secured the team victory thanks to a 1-2 finish from Christian Miller (20:05.09) and Owen Holt (21:03.38).

The Hurricanes’ other counting times came from Ryan Restel (seventh in 22:08.52), Jarrett Price (eighth in 22:23.29) and Lane Britt (10th in 23:01.45).

Southeastern Homeschool got a third-place finish from Makkale Gottal (21:23.58), while WCA’s Grayson Brazik rounded out the top five with a time of 22:07.37.

Freshman Emma Gibbs of Cape Fear Academy claimed the victory by completing the course in 22:35.63.

She was followed by teammates Kylie Petrides (23:09.29), Pennie Utnage (23:44.03) and Sydney Cortina (25:01.70) to help the Hurricanes finish with 18 points. 

Southeastern Homeschool’s Taylor Bohlmann placed fifth with a time of 25:55.90.
