On a night in which he was also crowned Homecoming King, senior running back Caden Morton scored a pair of touchdowns to help the Wildcats remain unbeaten all-time in the series.

Both of Morton’s touchdowns were set up by fumble recoveries. The New Hanover (4-3, 3-1 Mideastern) defense forced six turnovers in the contest.

“I told our team we were at a crossroads after the loss last week and they responded,” New Hanover coach Dylan Dimock said.

Morton put the home team on top by plowing his way into the end zone from 2-yards out with 3:57 remaining in the second quarter.

On the first play of the ensuing series, North Brunswick (5-2, 2-2) put the ball on the ground and it was recovered by Zihiem Graham.

Two plays later, Morton scored on a 9-yard run for his second TD in 26 seconds.

The Scorpions cut the deficit in half on a 5-yard run from Jabril Dashiell late in the third quarter. After both teams traded three-and-outs, North Brunswick got another key defensive stop.

However, the punt was muffed and recovered by the Wildcats in the red zone. They weren’t able to find the end zone, but Austin Luther’s 28-yard field goal split the uprights to increase the lead to 17-7.

Eric Mosley got loose for his only long run of the game, a 59-yard touchdown, less than a minute later to get the Scorpions back to within three points. The senior had 13 carries for 110 yards.

New Hanover responded with one of its best drives of the season, going 65 yards in 10 plays and taking more than six minutes off the clock.

Running back Mason Shand converted a pair of third downs. On third-and-6 from the 10-yard line, Jack Eller lofted a pass to the corner of the end zone that was hauled in by Zeus Batts  with 3:14 to play.

North Brunswick scored on a 35-yard pass from TT Green to Chris Webb with 1:58 on the clock to cut the deficit to 23-21.

With a chance to put the game away, New Hanover coach Dylan Dimock rolled the dice on fourth-and-3 with a play action pass that was executed to perfection. Eller found a wide open Hudson Szczypta for a 33-yard score.

“That was related to what happened last week when I was too conservative,” Dimock said. “I felt like our defense was playing well enough that if we had to get one more stop we could.”

Eller finished 10 of 18 for 118 yards. Morton rushed for 79 yards on 24 carries.

No. 13 Pender 106, Hobbton 83
