BOYS SOCCER

Southeastern Homeschool 1, East Wake Homeschool 0

Lliam Fay scored the game’s lone goal on a 40-yard free kick in the 21st minute to lift the Cardinals to their first victory of the season.

Southeastern Homeschool (1-6-1, 1-2-1 NCHEAC East) goalkeeper Davidson Good stopped all 11 shots he faced to earn the clean sheet.

The Cardinals host North Wake Homeschool on Friday at 6 p.m.

Topsail 2, Hoggard 1 (OT)

James Manning buried an 18-yard shot just inside the far post to give the Pirates a historic victory.

Not only was it Topsail’s (5-1, 3-0 Mideastern) first-ever win over Hoggard (3-3-1, 2-1), but it also kept them unbeaten in conference play. 

The game-winning goal was assisted by Hayden Howell. Tanner Kelly converted a penalty kick for the Pirates’ other goal.

Goalkeeper Andrew Benenhaley had a terrific performance with eight saves.

Next up for Topsail is a home match against Ashley on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Vikings play at Ashley at 6 p.m. Monday.

New Hanover 10, South Brunswick 0

Senior standout Aidan Payne scored five goals and the Wildcats cruised to a mercy-rule win in a match that was stopped at halftime.

Charlie Letson had a hat trick, while Luke Carter and Henry Boyd also found the back of the net.

New Hanover (9-0-1, 3-0 Mideastern) got three assists from John Franck as well as one a piece from Christian Mullins, David Godin, Brodie Franck and Chris Sales.

The Wildcats play at West Brunswick on Tuesday at 5 p.m. South Brunswick (3-4-1, 0-3) travels to Laney at 6 p.m. Monday.

Ashley 7, West Brunswick 0

The Screaming Eagles remained in a three-way tie atop of the Mideastern Conference standings with a dominant performance at home.

Junior Colin Bates scored twice, while freshman Nick Cenatiempo added a goal and an assist. 

Ashley’s (6-1, 3-0 Mideastern) other goals were scored by Connor Kaczynski, Harold Macias, Chris Crouch and Nick Lamendola.

Kevin Tejada dished out a pair of assists. Andrew Gordon, Caden Pierce and Matt Madej each finished with one.

Next up for the Screaming Eagles is a home match against Hoggard on Monday night at 6. West Brunswick (1-6, 0-3) welcomes New Hanover at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Wesleyan Christian Academy 4, Cape Fear Academy 2

Cameron Arne scored a goal in each half, but the Hurricanes fell to the talented NCISAA 4A team from High Point.

CFA (9-3) opened Coastal Rivers Conference play at Fayetteville Academy at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

MK Bebb won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and sister Anika Bebb picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 to lead the Cardinals. 

Corrie Boehling dropped only two games at No. 3, while Emma Naef (No. 4) and Brynn McCabe (No. 5) both lost only three games. Hannah Grace Bebb finished the singles sweep with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6.

MK Bebb teamed up with Alaina Anderson for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while Naef and Parker Christian won 8-6 at No. 3.

Hoggard 8, West Brunswick 0 

Match 1

Zoe Wilcox (No. 1), Chloe Bright (No. 5) and Mary Westendorff (No. 6) all won 8-0 in singles and the Vikings cruised on the road.

Hoggard’s (7-2, 6-1 Mideastern) other singles victories came from Katie Sechrist (8-6 at No. 2), Hailey Schreiber (8-1 at No. 3) and Lucy Boswell (8-1 at No. 4).

The doubles teams of Megan Corrigan/Kris Foster (No. 2) and Lily Bobo/Mia Mormando (No. 3) won by identical 8-0 scores.

No. 1 doubles wasn’t contested.

Match 2

The Vikings completed the doubleheader sweep by dropping only one game in six singles matches.

Lucy Boswell (No. 1), Chloe Bright (No. 2), Megan Corrigan (No. 4), Kris Foster (No. 5) and Lily Bobo (No. 6) all won 8-0, while Mary Westendorff lost only one game at No. 3. 

Hoggard (8-2, 7-1 Mideastern) hosts New Hanover at 4 p.m. Friday. West Brunswick (0-8, 0-7) hosts South Brunswick on Friday at 4 p.m.

Kendall Mills (No. 3) and Abrielle Herbert (No. 6) rolled to 6-0, 6-0 singles victories to lead the Pirates.

Grace Breeden lost only one game at No. 2, while Georgia Ford won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. Topsail’s (4-3, 3-3 Mideastern) other singles victory came by a 6-3, 6-0 score at No. 5 from Karli Hartman.

Breeden and Marci LaRowe teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, while Hartman and Herbert dropped only one game at No. 3.

South Brunswick (1-6, 1-5) got a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles from Sarah Subach. Allie Theisen and Julia Wagaman picked up a hard-fought 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles.

The Pirates play at Hoggard on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Cougars play at West Brunswick at 4 p.m. Friday.

New Hanover 9, North Brunswick 0

The Wildcats remained unbeaten by winning all six courts that were contested.

Sara Frances Butler (No. 2) and Estelle Monteith (No. 4) didn’t drop a game in singles, while Sophia Catino (No. 1) and Molly Weinberg (No. 3) both won 8-1.

New Hanover (7-0, 7-0 Mideastern) got 8-1 doubles victories from Catino/Butler (No. 1) and Weinberg/Monteith (No. 2).

North Brunswick (1-6, 1-5) had to forfeit No. 5 and 6 singles as well as No. 3 doubles.

Next up for the Wildcats is a road match against Hoggard on Friday at 4 p.m. The Scorpions host Laney at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

At Long Leaf Park

Senior Joseph Moran of Laney was the only runner to complete the course in under 17 minutes, but the Buccaneers suffered a one-point loss to Hoggard.

Moran crossed the finish line in 16:49.55 for a nearly 30-second victory over New Hanover’s Colin Egan (17:18.49).

Hoggard’s Ryan Ibarra was third in 17:24.29. Teammates Aiden Andrews (fifth in 18:09.51), Luke Ward (sixth in 18:19.08), Will Clancey (13th in 18:37.17) and Knox Trask (15th in 18:44.68) had the other counting scores.

Laney’s other top-10 finishers were Clinton Hubbard (fourth in 17:26.44) and Ethan Joyner (eighth in 18:20.92).

Robert Tellez of Topsail (seventh in 18:20.33), Joca Trecco of New Hanover (ninth in 18:28.04) and Leo Hernandez of West Brunswick (10th in 18:33.07) also had terrific performances.

At Long Leaf Park

The two-time defending NCHSAA 4A state champions placed six runners in the top 10 to cruise to a dominant victory.

Junior standout Kaitlyn Obremski of Topsail was the individual winner with a time of 18:09.77. Laney’s Olivia Bufalini was the second runner to cross the finish line in 18:30.34.

Hoggard’s counting scores were from Molly Parker (third in 18:55.67), Ashlei Summers (fourth in 19:12.64), Shea Hoffacker (sixth in 19:56.40), Savannah Moore (seventh in 20:17.90) and Luci Hosley (eighth in 20:18.78). Freshman Olivia Burdette placed ninth with a time of 20:37.68.

Rounding out the top 10 were a pair of Laney runners – Isabella Borelli (fifth in 19:29.22) and Amanda Beckman (10th in 20:38.07).

VOLLEYBALL

Ashley 3, Laney 1

(18-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-17)

After dropping the opening set, the Mideastern Conference leaders regrouped and cruised in the final three sets.

Savannah Cook had another outstanding performance with a match-high 14 kills to go along with eight digs, six assists and five blocks. Annalyse Askew chipped in 10 digs and nine kills.

Ashley (10-3, 8-0) also got 22 assists, 14 digs, six aces and six kills from Marlee Cook as well as 12 digs, five kills and a pair of aces from Bella Cook.

Bella Josey added 11 digs and three assists, while Elizabeth Claire Toomer finished with 10 digs and two aces.

The Screaming Eagles play at West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Laney (8-6, 5-3) hosts Croatan in a nonconference match Monday night at 6.

New Hanover 3, North Brunswick 0

(25-9, 25-11, 25-20)

A double-double of 11 kills, 11 digs, six assists and two aces from senior Mary Moore helped the Wildcats get back to .500 on the season.

Moore finished with a hitting percentage of .588. Sarah Collins put down 10 kills and Ali Blackwell finished with nine for New Hanover (4-4, 4-3 Mideastern).

Blackwell added five digs and three aces, while Collins finished with six digs. Lily Walters chipped in 12 digs and four aces. Lillee Moore dished out a team-high 16 assists to go along with seven digs.

The two teams play again Monday night at North Brunswick (0-12, 0-6) at 6 p.m.

Topsail 3, South Brunswick 0

(25-14, 25-22, 25-17)

The Pirates rolled to a road sweep behind a big performance from Carrina Shugarts.

The senior outside hitter finished with 14 digs, six kills and four aces. All three led the team.

Topsail (4-6, 3-4 Mideastern) served 14 aces, including three a piece from Ellee Beaman and Ryan Lambert. Olivia Hatcher added five kills and two blocks, while Nelly Keziah dished out eight assists. 

Next up for the Pirates is a road match against West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Monday. South Brunswick (2-8, 2-6) plays at New Hanover on Tuesday night at 6.

Hoggard 3, West Brunswick 0

(25-8, 25-9, 25-9)

Hoggard hit .358 with 13 aces and six blocks in the dominant road win.

Katie Ramsland led the way by hitting .625 with five kills, three blocks and a pair of aces.

The Vikings (9-5, 7-1 Mideastern) travel to D.H. Conley on Friday at 5:30 p.m. West Brunswick (0-10, 0-6) hosts Topsail on Monday at 6 p.m.

Cape Fear Academy defeats New Hanover

at Landfall

Elle Burnette shot a 1-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors and help the Hurricanes claim the nine-hole victory at the Dye Course.

CFA also counted a 43 from Isabel Bellamy as well as a 53 from Chloe Adler. 

Scores for New Hanover weren’t provided.
