Hoggard 28, Topsail 7

Senior quarterback Sam Jones threw a pair of touchdown passes and rushed for another to lead the Vikings to a road victory.

The game was scoreless at halftime, but Hoggard (4-1, 2-0 Mideastern) found the end zone on both its drives in the third quarter to build a 14-0 lead.

Sam Williams capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to get the Vikings on the board.

Jones connected with Trey Parkes for a 42-yard score to double the lead.

Hoggard went for it on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line early in the fourth quarter and the gamble paid off as Jones called his own number for a touchdown.

Following a fumble recovery by Eric Wagner, the Vikings struck again when Jones found tight end Carter Moses for a 21-yard touchdown.

Jones finished 21 of 25 for 166 yards. Williams rushed for 71 yards on 13 carries, while Parkes made seven catches for 78 yards.

Topsail (1-3, 0-2) got a late 18-yard touchdown pass from Jack Lambert to Ronan McGuire.

West Brunswick 40, Ashley 29

The Trojans scored 13 unanswered points to come away with their first victory of the season.

Ethan Hutton intercepted a pass and returned it 83-yards for a touchdown to put Ashley (1-3, 0-2 Mideastern) on top 29-27 with 35 seconds left in the third quarter, but the lead didn’t last long.

West Brunswick (1-3, 1-1) quarterback Javan McCray found JJ Cobb for a 3-yard touchdown pass to put the visitors back in front 33-29. They later added a touchdown run. 

Kevon Daniels finished with three touchdowns, while Cobb had a pair.

Ryan Young and Jaxon Jones both had receiving touchdowns for the Screaming Eagles.

Pender 62, Lakewood 6

For the second straight week, the Patriots cruised to a mercy-rule victory.

No stats were provided for Pender, which improved to 3-1 on the season.

VOLLEYBALL

Coastal Christian 3, Grace Christian 0

(25-19, 28-26, 25-13)

Maris Grant dished out 19 assists to go along with three aces, while Hannah Bloodworth added 17 digs in the sweep.

UNC Asheville commit Lydia Pate put down a team-high nine kills. She also added five digs, three aces and three blocks.

Coastal Christian (20-2) also got eight aces, three kills and three digs from Kelly McConekey as well as nine assists, seven kills and four digs from Kora Beth Witzenman.

Emma Anderson chipped in six kills.

The Centurions visit Harrells Christian Academy on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. 

GIRLS TENNIS

New Hanover 7, Hoggard 2

The Wildcats won five singles matches and two doubles courts to take a commanding two-match lead in the Mideastern Conference standings.

Freshman Sophia Catino rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 victory at No. 1 singles. Sara Frances Butler avenged an earlier-season loss with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2.

New Hanover (8-0, 8-0) also got victories from Lucy Dimock (6-2, 6-4 at No. 3), Hanna Davis (6-0, 6-0 at No. 4) and Caroline Morrison (6-3, 6-2 at No. 5). 

In doubles, Davis and Piper Monteith dropped only one game at No. 3 to seal the match win. Dimock and Morrison picked up a 9-8(1) victory at No. 2.

Hoggard (8-3, 7-2) got a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6(5) win at No. 6 singles from Katie Sechrist. Elena Berg and Margaret O’Malley teamed up for an 8-5 decision at No. 1 doubles.

Both teams play again Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Wildcats welcome South Brunswick, while the Vikings host Topsail.

South Brunswick 8, West Brunswick 1

Sarah Subach (No. 1), Allie Theisen (No. 3) and Julia Wagaman (No. 5) all rolled to 6-0, 6-0 singles wins and the Cougars completed the season sweep over their county rival.

South Brunswick’s (2-6, 2-5) other singles winners were Annie Stidham (6-3, 6-1 at No. 4) and Allie Hicks (6-0, 6-3 at No. 6).

Theisen and Wagaman didn’t drop a game at No. 2 doubles, while the teams of Subach/Jamison Barker (No. 1) and Stidham/Hicks (No. 3) won by identical 8-1 scores.

West Brunswick (0-9, 0-8) got a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles from Valery Cruz.

The Cougars play at New Hanover on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Trojans host South Columbus in a nonconference match at 4 p.m. Monday.

Laney 7, Ashley 2

From Thursday

After winning four singles matches, the Buccaneers clinched the victory by sweeping doubles.

Charlotte Balkcum cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles, while Ava Broadwell picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.

Laney’s (8-2, 6-2 Mideastern) other singles victories came from Airlie Buchter (6-1, 6-4 at No. 1) and Hailey Russell (6-3, 6-0 at No. 4).

Balkcum and Mary Scott Madigan teamed up for a hard-fought 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles. Buchter/Laurryen Lennon dropped only two games at No. 2, while Russell/Lily Golla picked up an 8-4 win at No. 3.

Ashley (3-4, 2-4) got victories from Emerson Shuttleworth (6-4, 1-6, 11-9 at No. 3) and Aspen Sawyer (7-6, 6-2 at No. 5).

The Buccaneers play at North Brunswick on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Screaming Eagles visit West Brunswick at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

BOYS SOCCER

Laney 8, North Brunswick 0

The Buccaneers picked up their first conference victory of the season behind a hat trick from Cole George.

Jaxon Rackley found the back of the net twice, while Gavin Dengate, Will Rehrey and Addison Woodock each scored once.

Laney (2-3-2, 1-2 Mideastern) hosts South Brunswick on Monday at 6 p.m. North Brunswick (1-7-1, 0-3) welcomes South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Wesleyan Christian Academy 6, Coastal Christian 1

For the second day in a row, the NCISAA 4A powerhouse knocked off a Wilmington team.

Josiah Davis scored the lone goal for Coastal Christian (7-7-1) off an assist from Zane Finley.

The Centurions begin Coastal Rivers Conference play Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Harrells Christian Academy. 

North Wake Homeschool 2, Southeastern Homeschool 1

JW Long scored in the 20th minute to tie the score at 1-1, but the Cardinals allowed the game-winning goal 17 minutes later.

Southeastern Homeschool (1-7-1, 1-3-1 NCHEAC East) goalkeeper Davidson Good finished with 15 saves.

Next up for the Cardinals is a home match against East Wake Homeschool on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Trask 24, Pender 35

At Trask (from Thursday)

The host Titans had seven of the top 10 finishers to claim the victory over their rival.

Pender’s Samuel Wheeler was the individual winner with a time of 20:21. He was followed by three Trask runners – Kyle Moore (20:33), Martin Lopez (20:59) and Edgar Ramirez Luna (21:08).

Also scoring for the Titans were Abelardo Santiago Garcia (seventh in 22:24) and Diego Villalobos (eighth in 22:32).

Pender got a fifth-place finish from Kamden Paluck (21:23) and a sixth-place finish from William Berry (21:57).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Trask 15, Pender no score

At Trask (from Thursday)

Junior Ainsley Heath completed her home course in 26:02 to earn a two-minute victory over Pender freshman Mallory Psioda.

The Patriots also got a third-place finish from Lillie Hansen (28:30), but two runners isn’t enough to earn a team score.

Trask’s other counting times came from Toni Bojorques-Hicks (fourth in 28:35), Jayden Hoffman (fifth in 29:45), Esmeralda Paz (seventh in 30:49) and Emily Mata-Quistian (eighth in 31:13).
