COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

BOYS SOCCER

No. 3 Laney 4, No. 9 North Brunswick 1

The Buccaneers built a 3-0 halftime lead and tacked on another goal late in the contest to secure a road victory.

Addison Woodcock put Laney (5-5-2, 2-1-2 Mideastern) on top for good in the 10th minute off an assist from Alan Acree.

Mason Israel found the back of the net in the 26th and 30th minutes. Jett Jones and Josue Velasquez handed out the assists.

North Brunswick (6-6-0, 1-4-0) cut the deficit to 3-1 on a long shot from Pablo Martinez in the 55th minute, but that was as close as the home team would get.

Henry Tidey found Fisher Minecci for the final goal in the 77th minute.

Both teams return to action Thursday. The Buccaneers play at South Brunswick at 6 p.m., while the Scorpions host Topsail at 7 p.m.

No. 7 Topsail 2, No. 2 Ashley 1

Junior goalkeeper Ben Drumm made seven saves for the Pirates, who snapped a three-match losing streak.

Both Topsail (5-7-2, 3-2-0 Mideastern) goals came in the final two minutes of the opening half from Maddox Kelly and Tyler McVey.

Kelly now has a team-high 12 goals on the season. Achilleas Boutis dished out an assist.

Freshman Luke Tierney scored Ashley’s (8-3-2, 2-2-1) goal off an assist from Nick Cenatiempo.

Next up for the Pirates is a road match against North Brunswick on Thursday night at 7. The Screaming Eagles travel to New Hanover at 6 p.m. Thursday. 

No. 6 New Hanover 5, No. 8 West Brunswick 0

The Wildcats remained unbeaten in Mideastern Conference play thanks in large part to a two-goal performance from Waller Hicks.

New Hanover (6-4-2, 4-0-1) also got one goal a piece from Miles Bickel, John Franck and Shay Payne.

The Wildcats host Ashley at 6 p.m. Thursday. West Brunswick (4-6-0, 1-4-0) plays at Hoggard on Thursday at 6 p.m.

No. 1 Hoggard 9, No. 13 South Brunswick 0

Senior Jesus Juarez had his first career hat trick, and the Vikings scored all nine goals in the opening half to end the match by mercy rule.

Defender Johnny Morello scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 10th minute off an assist from Jalen Criss.

Isaiah Jumansingh, Lukas Magne, Mason Morgan, Garrett Slocum and Ari Tanner put home Hoggard’s (10-1-1, 5-0-0 Mideastern) other goals.

Cash Foster had two assists, while Morgan and Dylan Lewis each finished with one. Goalkeeper Ryan Kromke earned the clean sheet.

The Vikings host West Brunswick on Thursday at 6 p.m. South Brunswick (1-7-0, 0-5-0) welcomes Laney at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 15 Wilmington Christian Academy 10, Living Water Christian 1

Senior Levi Lancaster and freshman Aiden McDonough both had three goals and one assist in the dominant performance. 

WCA (6-4-0, 3-2-0 NCCSA 2A District 4) led 3-0 at halftime. Jake Errett added one goal and three assists, and Noah Zechiel finished with one goal and two assists. 

Matthew Schultz and Keegan Tighe both chipped in one goal and one assist. Thomas Lenfestey dished out an assist.

Goalkeepers Calloway Upchurch and Micah Harmon each made three saves.

Next up for the Patriots is a home match against Greenville Christian Academy on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

No. 5 Cape Fear Academy 9, Coastal Brigade 0

Adam Politi opened the scoring in the opening minute of the match, and Cam Steven ended things with his second goal in the 42nd minute.

Steven also dished out a pair of assists. Politi found the back of the net twice, while Harry Osborne handed out two assists.

CFA’s (9-2-0) other goals came from Jacob Borstad, Council Lancaster, Henry Wall, Jonah Warshaw and Jace Williams.

Sophomore Will Kaplan preserved the shutout by stopping the only shot he faced. 

The Hurricanes welcome Arendell Parrott Academy on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Arendell Parrott Academy 6, No. 4 Coastal Christian 5 (OT)

The Centurions nearly rallied from a 4-0 halftime deficit, but eventually fell when the home team converted a penalty kick in overtime.

Connor Mason and Joel Marin each finished with one goal and one assist. Kyle Desmond, Zane Finley and Brody Wilson scored the other goals. 

Jackson Baker and Liam Reese both handed out one assist. 

Coastal Christian (6-6-0, 5-1-0 CPIC) hosts John Paul II at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

VOLLEYBALL

No. 2 Coastal Christian 3, No. 7 Cape Fear Academy 0

(25-7, 25-12, 25-22)

For the second night in a row, the Centurions took down a previously unbeaten member of the Coastal Plain Independent Conference. 

The victory gave Coastal Christian (20-4, 6-0) sole possession of first place in the league standings. 

No individual stats were provided for the Centurions, who play at Ashley on Monday night at 6. 

CFA (13-6, 4-1) got 10 digs and seven kills from Maggie Clucas as well as 15 digs, five kills and two aces from Carolina Bariglio.

Mary Ryan Campbell chipped in 15 digs and four kills. Cora Bariglio finished with 16 assists. 

The Hurricanes plat at John Paul II at 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

No. 3 Laney 3, No. 5 Ashley 0

(25-10, 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 15-12)

A career-high 20 kills from senior Ella Thompson lifted the Buccaneers to a thrilling victory.

Thompson also finished with 10 digs. Isabel Sandstrum chipped in 13 kills, 12 digs and four blocks.

Laney (10-5, 7-2 Mideastern) setters Alleigh Russ and Lauren Whisnant combined for 41 assists and 16 digs. 

It was the second five-set match between the teams this season. Ashley (6-9, 6-3) won at home on Sept. 11.

Both teams are on the road Thursday at 6 p.m. The Buccaneers visit Hoggard, while the Screaming Eagles travel to New Hanover.

No. 9 South Brunswick 3, No. 10 New Hanover 1

(22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16)

The Cougars completed the season sweep by winning the final three sets just like they did in the previous matchup on Sept. 20. 

South Brunswick (5-8, 4-5 Mideastern) now has a three-game lead in the win column over both North Brunswick and West Brunswick in the 3A portion of the league standings. 

No individual stats were provided for the Cougars, who host North Brunswick on Thursday night at 6. 

New Hanover (5-11, 1-8) senior outside hitter Kaitlin Goggin put down a team-best 15 kills to go along with eight digs and three aces. Lillee Moore handed out 30 assists, while Reese Donovan finished with 14 digs.  

The Wildcats return to action Thursday at home against Ashley at 6 p.m.

No. 1 Hoggard 3, No. 11 West Brunswick 0

(25-11, 25-5, 25-15)

Senior setter Megan Kelly handed out her 1,000th career assist in another lopsided win.

Hoggard (10-1, 8-0 Mideastern) hasn’t lost a set in conference play. No individual stats were provided for the Vikings, welcome Laney at 6 p.m. Thursday. 

West Brunswick (4-9, 1-7) hosts Topsail on Thursday night at 6.

GIRLS TENNIS

New Hanover 9, South Brunswick 0

Hanna Davis (No. 2) and Emma Miller Buchanan (No. 6) cruised to 6-0, 6-0 singles victories in the sweep.

New Hanover (15-0, 11-0 Mideastern) also got singles wins from Sophia Catino (6-0, 6-1 at No. 1), Elizabeth Sifly (6-1, 6-1 at No. 3), Anna Holt Basinger (6-3, 6-2 at No. 4) and Bella Cosgrove (6-1, 6-3 at No. 5).

Catino and Davis dropped only one game at No. 1 doubles. The other two points came from the teams of Blair Mickle/Dare Turner (8-6 at No. 2) and Maggie Hooks/Peyton Theobald (8-5 at No. 3). 

The Wildcats host Ashley at 4 p.m. Thursday. South Brunswick (7-7, 4-6) welcomes North Brunswick on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Hoggard 6, West Brunswick 0

(Match 1)

Helen Bennington (No. 2), Kathryn Hildreth (No. 3), Lucy Boswell (No. 4), Kate Bennington (No. 5) and Lily Bobo (No. 6) won by identical 8-0 scores in singles.

Hoggard also got an 8-3 win at No. 1 from Hailey Schreiber. 

Hoggard 9, West Brunswick 0

(Match 2)

The Vikings dropped just two games in single and three in doubles to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Kate Bennington (No. 2), Lily Bobo (No. 3), Kennedy Lawrence (No. 4) and Helen Brock (No. 6) had 8-0 singles victories. Lucy Boswell (No. 1) and Audrey Bobo (No. 5) both lost one game. 

The Bobo sisters won 8-0 at No. 2. Another sister pairing, Helen and Kate Bennington, had an 8-1 score at No. 1. 

Lawrence and Brock earned an 8-2 victory at No. 3.  

Hoggard (9-2, 8-1 Mideastern) hosts Laney at 4 p.m. Thursday. West Brunswick (1-10, 1-9) welcomes Topsail on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Cape Fear Academy 6, St. David’s School 3

After winning two of the three doubles courts, the Hurricanes picked up victories at the top four singles positions to remain unbeaten in Coastal Plain Independent Conference play.

Alex Zakszeski and Gunnie Beacham had an 8-2 score at No. 2 doubles, while Taylor Garriott and Liza Wells prevailed by a score of 8-4 at No. 3.

Zakszeski dropped only one game at No. 2 singles. Garriott (6-1, 6-4 at No. 1), Wells (6-3, 6-4 at No. 3) and Beacham (6-3, 6-0 at No. 4) earned the other points. 

CFA (8-1, 6-0) hosts Arendell Parrott Academy at 4 p.m. Thursday.
