The Vikings weren’t able to generate much offense against a stout Wake Forest defense.

A trick play resulted in Hoggard’s only touchdown. Trey Parkes found fellow wide receiver Conrad Newman for a 21-yard score late in the third quarter. Parkes hauled in the 2-point conversion pass from quarterback Sam Jones to cut the deficit to 16-8.

Hoggard’s (2-1) offense had three opportunities to try and even the score, but two of them ended with an interception and the other with a punt.

Newman hauled in five catches for 50 yards. Running back Sam Williams finished with 11 carries for 30 yards.

The Vikings turned the ball over four times and finished with only 170 total yards of offense.

Laney 51, Lumberton 0

Junior quarterback Ty Little went 15 of 17 for 330 yards and a career-high five touchdowns as the Buccaneers cruised in their home opener.

Little’s favorite target was senior Connor Powe, who finished with six catches for 175 yards and a pair of scores.

Carson Adkins also caught two touchdown passes, while Mari Brown had the other.

Laney is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2011. That team finished 8-4 and reached the second round of the playoffs.

Coach Luke Little was pleased with the effort of his defense, which got interceptions from Chuck Jones and Marcus Johnson.

Tyler Thompson finished with a team-high seven tackles, while Charlie Bishop added six.

Running backs Jacob Johnson and Eli Rivera both found the end zone once. Johnson had eight carries for 69 yards and Rivera finished with 54 yards on seven carries.

South Brunswick 55, West Bladen 6

For the first time since 2010, the Cougars are 3-0.

Bishop Brown scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and sophomore quarterback Jameson Prince threw for three in the lopsided road win.

It was even more impressive because South Brunswick was without the services of starting running back Danny Parker, who scored five touchdown in a Week 2 win over Midway.

West Bladen scored the only points in the first quarter on an interception return. Brown then scored twice to give the Cougars a 14-6 halftime lead.

His third touchdown came on a 12-yard run early in the third quarter. Prince connected with Mark Bishop for a 20-yard score to increase the lead to 28-6.

Prince also connected with Michael Shrewsbury for a 45-yard touchdown pass.

Antwan Thompson found the end zone twice, while Shrewsbury also added a rushing touchdown.

The South Brunswick defense still hasn’t allowed a touchdown through 12 quarters this season.

North Brunswick 34, Bunn 20

The Scorpions were scheduled to host Swansboro, but found out Friday morning the Pirates weren’t able to play.

Coach Bryan Davis scrambled to find an opponent and it just so happened Bunn was also looking for a game.

Less than nine hours after scheduling the game, the teams were on the field for kickoff.

North Brunswick (1-1) quarterback RJ Green had a huge performance, accounting for all five touchdowns.

He put the home team on top 7-6 with an impressive 45-yard touchdown run late in the opening quarter. Green ran over a Bunn defender on his way to the end zone.

The lead grew to 14-6 when Green connected with Seth D’louhy for a 42-yard score with 5:32 left in the second quarter.

North Brunswick had the ball at its own 41 with 8.3 seconds remaining before halftime. Green scrambled around and made multiple defenders miss before sailing a Hail Mary pass that was hauled in by Dom’ahnic Atkinson-Bell just shy of the goal line.

A penalty was called on Bunn, so the Scorpions got an untimed down from the 1. Green followed his offensive linemen into the end zone to give North Brunswick all the momentum.

Green’s second half touchdown passes were caught by D’louhy (40 yards) and Jaiden Granda (10 yards).

East Duplin 48, Pender 44

The Patriots got off to a great start and built a 22-7 lead in the opening quarter, but they were unable to hold on.

Pender (1-1) was originally scheduled to host rival Trask in a nonconference game. That game was cancelled, so they picked up Croatan. Coach Tom Eanes found out Friday that game also wouldn’t be played, so he quickly got East Duplin on the phone and set up a game.

Jadon Lee found the end zone four times, including a 95-yard kickoff return. The Patriots also got 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns from quarterback Antonio Bea.

Carolina Forest, S.C. 28, New Hanover 0

The Wildcats fell to 1-1 with a road loss.

Carolina Forest scored on a 46-yard run from Kalil Johnson with 6:06 remaining in the first quarter to grab a 7-0 lead.

On the final play of the quarter, New Hanover had a bad snap on a punt attempt which gave the Panthers great field position.

Quarterback Scott Saylor called his own number from the 5-yard line and reached the end zone to double the lead.

The advantage grew to 21-0 after Luke Janack found the end zone from 3-yards out. Bryson Johnson scored the final touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run.

New Hanover’s best scoring chance came in the fourth quarter, but a missed field goal ended the drive.
