Capsules

Mideastern Conference

No. 5 New Hanover (4-3, 3-1) at No. 2 Laney (5-2, 3-1)

Kickoff time: 7 p.m.

Series history: New Hanover leads 34-14

Last meeting: New Hanover won 23-21 in 2022

Tim’s Take: For the second week in a row, New Hanover meets another team with just one conference loss. The Wildcats forced six turnovers in last Friday’s home victory over North Brunswick. Those turnovers led to some short-field opportunities, which the offense was able to capitalize on. Junior quarterback Jack Eller led a nice 10-play, 65-yard drive in the fourth quarter. He also completed a 33-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-3 to seal the victory. Laney cruised to a 49-7 win over West Brunswick behind three touchdown runs from senior running back Tyjhere Crudup. It was the second week in a row he found the end zone three times. The Buccaneers’ defense continued its terrific play by forcing a pair of turnovers and finishing with four sacks.

No. 1 Hoggard (6-1, 4-0) at No. 8 Topsail (4-3, 2-2)

Kickoff time: 7 p.m.

Series history: Hoggard leads 9-1

Last meeting: Hoggard won 10-0 in 2022

Tim’s Take: The league-leading Vikings are playing as well as any team in the state right now. During its six-game winning streak, Hoggard is averaging 41.3 points. In last Friday’s 38-6 victory over Ashley, the offense scored on its first six possessions to put the game out of reach. Senior quarterback Hudson Wilharm has incredible stats so far this season. He is 88-for-127 for 1,233 yards and 14 TDs. Topsail also has a outstanding quarterback in junior Eli Hebron, who has completed 95 of 161 passes for 1,297 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Pirates have a trio of talented receivers in Damarion Smith (28 catches, 412 yards, 8 TDs), Ryder Willcox (24 catches, 397 yards, 3 TDs) and Caden Wilson (10 catches, 228 yards, 5 TDs). That group will face its most difficult challenge of the season against a loaded Hoggard secondary led by Kamar Fulton (42 tackles, 2 interceptions) and Josiah Gillespie (30 tackles, 4 interceptions)

No. 10 South Brunswick (2-5, 0-4) at No. 4 Ashley (4-3, 2-2)

Kickoff time: 7 p.m.

Series history: South Brunswick leads 12-5

Last meeting: South Brunswick won 52-7 in 2022

Tim’s Take: Coming into the season, Ashley coach Dante Lombardi set a goal of winning six games. The Screaming Eagles are inching closer, but will likely need a win here to keep hopes alive. This is also an important game for their playoffs hopes. The last time the program advanced to the postseason was 2007. The Screaming Eagles have played two of the MEC’s best defenses (Hoggard and New Hanover) the past two weeks, so facing a South Brunswick unit allowing 39.2 points should be a welcomed sign. The Cougars have played two close games in league play, but are still in search of their first victory. The Cougars rolled in this matchup at home a year ago behind five total TDs from quarterback Jameson Prince (three passing and two rushing). Ethan Overton rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown. Both players are back and looking for repeat performances.

No. 15 West Brunswick (0-7, 0-4) at No. 6 North Brunswick (5-2, 2-2)

Kickoff time: 7 p.m.

Series history: West Brunswick leads 30-7

Last meeting: North Brunswick won 50-15 in 2022

Tim’s Take: After suffering a disappointing road loss at New Hanover last week, the Scorpions will look to get back on track by earning a third straight victory in a series that has otherwise been dominated by West Brunswick. North Brunswick turned the ball over six times last Friday, so coach Bryan Davis will certainly want to see that get cleaned up. Getting the ball in the hands of Eric Mosley is always a smart choice. He has a chance of surpassing 1,000 yards for the season with a big performance. The Trojans haven’t scored more than 14 points in any of their past six games, so finding any kind of consistency on that side of the ball would be nice for first-year coach Shane Handy to see.

Waccamaw Conference

No. 3 West Columbus (6-1, 3-0) at No. 9 East Bladen (5-3, 4-0)

Kickoff time: 7:30 p.m.

Twitter updates: Follow @CoastalPreps for updates until halftime

Last meeting: East Bladen won 51-16 in 2020

Tim’s Take: First place in the league is on the line between a pair of teams who haven’t lost since September 8.  This should be a fun matchup between one of the area’s best defenses in West Columbus against one of the area’s best offensive players in East Bladen senior running back Masion Brooks  (110 carries for 1,435 yards and 25 TDs). Brooks has been running wild against Waccamaw Conference opponents, but this will be his toughest task. When the Vikings have the ball, quarterback Unique Kelly is the player to watch. He has 742 passing yards, 509 rushing yards and has accounted for 15 total touchdowns.

No. 7 Whiteville (5-2, 2-1) at No. 13 Pender (4-3, 1-2)

Kickoff time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Whiteville leads 12-3

Last meeting: Whiteville win 28-6 in 2022

Tim’s Take: After playing the highest-scoring game in NCHSAA history, what can Pender do for an encore? Whiteville’s defense is much better than Hobbton, so don’t expect another 106-point performance. The Wolfpack still have asperations of claiming at least a share of the Waccamaw Conference title and getting a high seed for the 2A playoffs, but they can’t afford to falter in this one. Pender will look to control the line of scrimmage and time of possession with its ground attack that is led by Jassiah Hill (67 carries for 793 yards and 10 TDs) and Jeremiah Johnson (114 carries for 908 yards and 12 TDs).

No. 11 Trask (3-4, 0-3) at No. 12 South Columbus (3-4, 1-3)

Kickoff time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: South Columbus leads 5-1

Last meeting: Trask won 44-14 in 2022

Tim’s Take: The Titans earned their first-ever victory of the Stallions a season ago in dominant fashion. Now, they would like to do it on the road. Trask is currently No. 33 in the 2A RPI, while South Columbus sits at No. 28. The winner of this game will certainly improve its playoff chances.
