2022 Hoggard Holiday Classic Day 1 Girls Recaps

No. 6 Laney 63, James Kenan 32

Guards Aniece Lewis and Jada Simpson combined for eight 3-pointers and 39 points to give the Buccaneers a comfortable win in the first game of the event.

Simpson led all scorers with 21 points, including 12 in the third quarter. Lewis drained five 3-pointers en route to her 18 points.

“Jada always knows where I’m at and I always know where she’s at,” Lewis said. “If one of us is on, we’re feeding each other.”

Laney (7-4) led 30-15 at halftime before pushing the advantage to 51-20 after three quarters.

RonNyia Joyner paced James Kenan (1-5) with eight points.

No. 1 Hoggard 32, Heritage 20

Both teams were locked in defensively for the entire 32 minutes, but the Vikings mustered up enough offense to claim its 10th victory of the season.

Presbyterian signee Laney Scoggins led all scorers with 12 points to go along with four steals. Hoggard (10-1) also got nine points and nine rebounds from Wingate signee Anya Massey.

Lexi Steed did a great job on the glass, finishing with a team-best 12 rebounds.

Heritage (7-5) got five points a piece from Sky Donaie and Jayden Rhodes.

The Huskies will be without head coach Jen Shepstead for the entire three-day event. She was unable to make the trip due to an illness.

Western Alamance 75, No. 2 Topsail 64

The highest scoring game in the two-year history of the event went to the Warriors, who jumped out to a 27-8 lead after the opening quarter. 

Western Alamance (9-1) extended its lead to 49-27 at halftime before holding on down the stretch.

Four Warriors reached double figures, led by 23 points from sophomore Allie Sykes. Emma Johnson (14), Cayden White (13) and Bri Pulliam (12) also had terrific performances. 

Western Alamance proved why it was the top scoring team entering the event. It was the fifth time this season the Warriors surpassed the 60-point mark.

“We really tried to focus on excelling on the things we do best,” Sykes said. “We prepared a little bit for their press, but we didn’t watch much film on them.”

Topsail (8-3), which scored 37 second half points, got 20 points and five rebounds from Carolina Coria.

Breanna Hebron chipped in 14 points, while Bri Jones and Madi Oakley both finished with nine.

Cox Mill 59, No. 5 New Hanover 42

Senior guard Kay Decker’s 24-point performance propelled the Chargers past the Wildcats.

Cox Mill (7-4) also got 13 points from Ariana Perry. The Chargers exploded for 23 points in the third quarter to extend its lead to 50-25.

“New Hanover was more physical than most of the teams we’ve faced this year, so it was a good test for us,” Cox Mill coach Scott Parkin.

Tamorie Wilson led the way for New Hanover (4-3) with 12 points. Fellow junior Iyana Rogers added 11 points.

Western Guilford 51, No. 3 Ashley 39

A terrific second half lifted the Hornets to a comeback victory over the previously unbeaten Screaming Eagles.

Western Guilford (3-5), which trailed 27-23 at halftime, allowed only 12 points over the final 16 minutes of the contest.

Leila Henderson scored 16 points to lead all scorers. Ella Butler chipped in 12.

Ashley (6-1) got a team-high 12 points from Marlee Cook as well as 10 from Anna Benfield.
