Now that the winter sports season has come to a close, it’s time to reveal the All-Coastal Preps teams. Over the next few days, you will get to know more about the players of the year while also seeing who made first and second team in swimming & diving, wrestling and basketball.

The Coastal Preps Girls Basketball Player of the Year is senior Anya Massey of Hoggard.

Anya’s Accomplishments

The Hoggard girls basketball team finished unbeaten in Mideastern Conference play for the second consecutive year thanks in large part to the play of point guard Anya Massey.

Massey averaged 11.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She shot 35 percent (74 of 212) from 3-point range and 84 percent (26 of 31) from the free throw line.

The Vikings finished 26-3 overall and 16-0 in the MEC. They cruised to a second straight conference tournament title by winning their three games by an average of 39.6 points.

Massey was at her best late in the season. Over the final 11 games, the senior averaged 15 points while shooting 44 percent (56 of 126) from the field.

She surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career with a 3-pointer against Laney in the semifinals of the MEC Tournament.

Massey will continue her career at Wingate.

Favorite memory from this season: Senior night. It was really special considering we had 7 seniors, and getting recognized with Anna-Hollis Pitt and Lexi Steed was awesome after playing with them since 8th grade.

Favorite memory from your career: Freshman year when I hit a half court buzzer beater to send our game against Laney to overtime. The gym was packed for the guys game and everyone went crazy.

Favorite thing about your school or team: My team this year got along like sisters on and off the court. We fought hard in practice because we all had the same goals and worked hard to achieve them, but then after practice we would all go to dinner and we were best friends. Having 7 seniors, we were really able to be a special team this year.
