Spot A Star is a list of the top individual performances of the week. Coaches are encourages to submit the names of their athletes who excelled on the field by 7 p.m. every Sunday. The list will be published each Monday.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Jack Phieffer, South Brunswick: Earned a third-place finish at the Wilmington XC Kickoff on Thursday at Hugh MacRae Park with a time of 17:39, which was well ahead of his previous personal best of 18:20.

Luke Scacheri, Ashley: Cruised to a season-opening victory at Thursday’s Wilmington XC Kickoff by finishing the course at Hugh MacRae Park in 16:58.

BOYS SOCCER

Nick Bennett, Laney: Put home the Buccaneers’ first goal of the season in a 2-1 victory at West Forsyth on Tuesday night.

Ethan Carne, Coastal Christian: Along with his solid defending in the back, Carne scored both goals to help the Centurions earn a draw with Northwest Guilford on Saturday at the NCSCA Kickogg Classic in Raleigh. His second goal came with only six minutes left in the contest.

Justin Eaves, Trask: Put home a goal and added an assist in Monday’s season-opening 3-1 victory over South Brunswick.

Landon James, New Hanover: In three contests, James scored twice and dished out an assist.

Cheeto Miranda, Laney: In Tuesday’s 2-1 season-opening win at West Forsyth, the sophomore scored the game-winning goal.

Lucas Neal, Laney: The senior forward registered both assists to help the Buccaneers open the season with a victory at West Forsyth.

Aidan Payne, New Hanover: Sophomore forward had a goal and two assists in thee matches.

Jackson Snyder, Coastal Christian: Finished the week with five goals and two assists from his central midfield spot. The senior had a hat trick and an assist in Friday’s 5-3 win over West Iredell at the NCSCA Kickoff Classic in Raleigh.

FOOTBALL

Burnie Burns, Topsail: Carried the ball 13 times for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Friday’s season-opening win at Trask.

Khamari Gorham, Trask: Senior finished with a team-high eight tackles and also had 34 rushing yards on six carries against Topsail.

Jabez Howard, New Hanover: In Friday’s dominant 49-7 victory at West Carteret, Howard had eight carries for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Jaheim Marshall, New Hanover: Skill senior wide receiver had five catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns in a season-opening 49-7 win at West Carteret. Marshall also had a 60-yard touchdown catch called back because of a penalty.

Cody Wallis, Topsail: Completed 15 of 23 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown to help the Pirates cruise to a 35-8 win at Trask.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Kaitlyn Obremski, Topsail: In her first high school race, the freshman dominant the rest of the field at the Wilmington XC Kickoff. Obremski completed the course at Hugh MacRae Park in a time of 18:29.

GIRLS GOLF

Livy Tran, Ashley: Shot a 3-over-par 39 on the Ibis Course at Carolina National to claim medalist honors at the nine-hole Mideastern Conference match on Wednesday.

Sierra Cardi, Hoggard: The senior transfer from Ohio shot a nine-hole score of 44 to earn a fourth-place finish at the opening Mideastern Conference match of the season at Carolina National.

GIRLS TENNIS

Elena Berg, Hoggard: The freshman opened her career by going 2-0 in singles, dropping only five total games, to help Hoggard pick up victories over Topsail and North Brunswick.

Mary Davis Thompson, New Hanover: Collected a pair of dominant victories at No. 1 singles (lost only three games) against Greenville Rose and Ashley to help the defending conference champions open the season with two 9-0 wins.

Elizabeth Vollmin, Hoggard: In Tuesday’s season-opening victory at Cape Fear Academy, Vollmin won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and teamed with Alex Lee for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

VOLLEYBALL

Melia Bordeaux, North Brunswick: Finished the week with 22 assists, 13 kills, nine digs and three aces in matches against Trask, Coastal Christian and East Duplin.

Sadie Luscher, Coastal Christian: Served 15 total aces in two matches, including 11 in a dominant victory over South Brunswick on Thursday.

Gia Marinelli, Topsail: Helped the Pirates open the season with three straight victories by leading the team in service points (31), kills (18), aces (13) and blocks (11).

Mallorie Moore, Coastal Christian: Hit a remarkable .580 with 10 kills on 17 swings to help the Centurions earn a pair of home victories. She also had nine blocks and a pair of aces.

Jayda Rascoe, North Brunswick: Had a big opening week of the season with 36 digs and five aces.

Mackenzie Turner, North Brunswick: In three matches, Turner finished with 20 digs, 13 kills and seven aces.

Anna Dudley Wetherill, Coastal Christian: In straight set victories over North Brunswick and South Brunswick, Wetherill put down 21 kills while hitting .480.

Kora Beth Witzenman, Coastal Christian: Sophomore setter averaged 10.3 assists per set (62 total in six sets) in a pair of 3-0 victories over North Brunswick and South Brunswick.
