2023 Boys Co-Swimmer of the Year: Sean Setzer

Now that the winter sports season has come to a close, it’s time to reveal the All-Coastal Preps teams. Over the next few days, you will get to know more about the players of the year while also seeing who made first and second team in swimming & diving, wrestling and basketball.

The Coastal Preps Boys Co-Swimmer of the Year is junior Sean Setzer from Ashley.

Sean’s Accomplishments

Sean Setzer put together one of the best seasons in Ashley history by qualifying for the NCHSAA 4A State Championship in four events and finishing as the runner-up in the 50 freestyle.

Setzer’s time of 20.20 broke his own New Hanover County record and was just a tenth of a second behind state champion Wells Walker of Broughton. His time would have won any previous 4A state title.

He placed 11th in the 100 breaststroke, and was on the 19th-place 200 freestyle relay and 21st-place 400 freestyle relay.

Setzer had the top five 50 freestyle times and top seven 100 breaststroke times in the area. He was also third in the 100 and 200 freestyle despite only swimming each event once.

At the 4A East Regional, Setzer was the champion in the 50 freestyle and runner-up in the 100 breaststroke. Both relay teams placed fifth.

Setzer claimed Mideastern Conference titles in both his individual events, while the relays were second.
