BOYS LACROSSE

Laney 10, Topsail 7

The Buccaneers rallied from a 5-1 deficit to secure the home victory.

Nic Lord led the way with two goals and two assists and Laney (3-1) also got two goals and an assist from Sam Lord. William Murray found the back of the net twice, while Cade McGrady, Justin Clayton, Nevan Ehinger and Jake Splendora all finished with one goal.

Goalkeeper Matt Lord made 10 saves.

Topsail (1-2) got two goals a piece from Tucker Parks and Gavyn Tawes as well as one from Hunter Bradley, Cooper Seidner and Josh Bowen. Oscar Sessoms made 12 saves in the cage.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Laney 18, New Bern 4

Nine players scored for the Buccaneers in the dominant win.

Payton Jones and Avery Pyrtle both finished with a hat trick, while Avery Woodcock and Sydney Shaw each chipped in two goals and two assists. Laney (4-2) also got two goals and one assist from Julia Jacobi and Kaia Dillon.

Rachel Neuherz found the back of the net twice and Leah Scaringe and Kiarra Masnick both had one goal and one assist. 

Ashley 17, South Brunswick 5

The Screaming Eagles build a comfortable 12-2 halftime advantage to secure a road victory.

No other information was provided. Ashley improved to 3-2 and South Brunswick slipped to 1-2.

Topsail 9, North Brunswick 1

A six-run second inning that saw 10 batters come to the plate lifted the Pirates to a Mideastern Conference win.

Senior pitcher Addy Howard allowed only three hits and struck out 10 to earn the victory. Offensively, Topsail (4-0, 1-0) got two hits a piece from Zoey Vincent, Olivia Visconti, Maggie Smith and Nee Nee  Jordan. Sydney Hartgrove and and Tyesha Williams both drove in two runs.

Cameryn Lisi hit a solo home run with one-out in the seventh inning for the lone North Brunswick (1-1, 0-1) run. 

Pender 6, Wallace-Rose Hill 2

Senior Lauren Gammons struck out 13 batters and the Patriots completed the season sweep and also remained unbeaten.

Telisha Moore had a double and three RBI and Diamond Armstrong also doubled for Pender (5-0).

BASEBALL

Hoggard 9, West Brunswick 1

Senior righty Sam Fox struck out 10 to run his season total to 29 in 14 innings and the Vikings opened Mideastern Conference play with a solid home victory.

Hoggard (1-2, 1-0) exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning to put the game out of reach with a four-run third. Connor Schaudt and Jackson Vargo led the way offensively with a pair of RBI.

West Brunswick’s (0-3) Tanner Babson had a triple and scored the lone run on a groundout.

North Brunswick 6, Topsail 3

The Scorpions earned the second victory in as many days thanks to a complete-game performance from Brayden Fritz.

Fritz allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out four to earn the victory. Seth Bowden and Daveon Troy both had a pair of hits and Bowden drove in two runs on a two-out single in the seventh inning that extended the lead to three.

North Brunswick (3-0, 1-0 Mideastern) grabbed the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning.

Marshall Sugden had a two-run home run and two walks for Topsail (3-1, 0-1). Bryan Holland didn’t factor into the decision despite allowing only two runs and striking out seven in five innings.

Ashley 12, Dixon 2 ( 5 innings)

Eight Screaming Eagles collected at least one hit and six had at least one RBI in the mercy-rule home victory.

Daniel Birkle had a stellar game on the mound, scattering three hits and striking out eight. Both runs he allowed were unearned.

Ashley (2-1) got a double from Barrett Swails along with triples from Birkle, Michael Brannin, Branton Jernigan and Haydan Pinckney. Brannin and Pinckney each drove in a pair of runs and Birkle, Noah Dail and Isaiah Hunter all scored two runs.

New Hanover 7, Jacksonville 4

The Wildcats scored seven unanswered runs after falling behind 4-0 after the first inning.

Chase Nixon earned the victory by striking out four and allowing only two hits in four scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He also went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI, including a game-tying RBI double in the sixth inning.

Hunter Hodges drove in the winning run in the sixth. Chuck Jones finished 2-for-2 with a double and three runs and Chase Hardee had a single and a run for New Hanover (3-1).

BOYS TENNIS

Ashley 5, South Brunswick 4

The Screaming Eagles won all three doubles courts to rally for the victory.

Paul Baranoski and Seth Olanovich won 8-1 at No. 3 and Jackson Griffin and Jacob Baugher claimed an 8-2 victory at No. 2 to even the score. Peter Gemboys and Bennitt Read clinched the match victory with an 8-6 decision at No. 1.

Ashley (1-3, 1-2 Mideastern) got singles wins from Baugher (4-6, 6-0, 10-7 at No. 4) and Baranoski (6-1, 6-4 at No. 5).

Ethan McNeill (6-2, 6-2 at No. 1), Stefano Pessina (6-0, 7-5 at No. 2), Asa Bruton (2-6, 6-2, 10-4 at No. 3) and Luke Shelton (6-1, 6-4 at No. 6) were South Brunswick’s (0-5, 0-4) singles winners.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Mideastern Conference meet at Laney

From Thursday

Hoggard won the season-opening meet thanks to strong performances in the hurdles and jumping events.

Kortnie Davidson won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.97 and Cheyenne Newkirk claimed the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.02.

Hoggard scored 103.5 points to edge Laney, which scored 97.5. South Brunswick finished with 42 and West Brunswick had 1 point.

The Vikings also got wins from Sloane Fleming-Hickey (3,200 in 11:36.47), Le’Nyyah Locke (long jump in 15-6), Leah Schwagerl (pole vault in 10-0) and the 4×400 relay.

Laney got a pair of individual victories from Journey Thompson (100 in 12.59 and 200 in 26.63) and Olivia Bufalini (800 in 2:27.46 and 1,600 in 5:15.06). Kamryn Ballard captured the 400 in 1:04.80 and the Buccaneers also won the 4×100 and 4×800 relays.

Nija Bryant of South Brunswick was victorious in the shot put (30-1.5) and discus (107.6) and teammate Brooke Moore cleared 4-8 to win the high jump. The Cougars also won the 4×200 relay.

Mideastern Conference meet at Topsail

From Thursday

Madison Lofton won the 100-meter dash (12.31), 200 (25.93) and 400 (59.71) to lead the host Pirates to a dominant victory. 

Topsail also got a pair of individual victories from Ariana Blevins (100 hurdles in 17.08 and triple jump in 36-0) and Alycia Artman (shot put in 32-10 and discus in 88-6).

Makayla Obremski claimed the 800 (2:21), Kaitlyn Obremski won the 1,600 (5:11), Emma Huff captured the 3,200 (13:05) and Abigail Hunt was victorious in the long jump with a distance of 15-8. The Pirates also won three of the four relays.

Ashley, which was second with 75 points, got wins from Hana Hagestrom (300 hurdles in 55.16) and Reagan Haney (5-0 in high jump).

North Brunswick scored 36 points and New Hanover finished with seven.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Mideastern Conference meet at Laney

From Thursday

Hoggard won all four relays and dominated the distance events to win the season-opening meet with 124 points.

Jaylin Allen captured the 100-meter dash in 11.10 and the Vikings also got victories from Mason Evans (200 in 22.71), Andrew Wallace (800 in 2:05.40), Luke Ward (3,200 in 10:34.92) and Jaden Bennion (pole vault in 11-6).

Laney brothers Casper Powe Jr. and Connor Powe combined to capture five events. Casper won the shot put with a distance of 43-0 and discus with a throw of 124-6. Connor was victorious in the 110 hurdles (15.37), long jump (21-5) and triple jump (41-0.5).

The Buccaneers, who scored 95.5 points also got wins from Joseph Moran (1,600 in 4:36.60), Nyjae Williams (300 hurdles in 42.02) and Mystic Wainwright (high jump in 5-6).

Noah Bullard of South Brunswick won the 400 with a time of 52.63. The Cougars scored 43.5 points and West Brunswick finished with six points.

Mideastern Conference meet at Topsail

From Thursday

A great showing in the distance events led Ashley to a 19-point victory over host Topsail.

The Screaming Eagles scored 93 points and Topsail finished with 74. North Brunswick had 64 points and New Hanover scored 23.

Ashley got wins in the 1,600-meter run (4:48) and 3,200 (10:06) from Luke Scacheri as well as victory in the 4×800 relay. Cole Bondarek captured the 300 hurdles in 45.48 and Jackson Kupec had a distance of 43-2 in the triple jump.

Jieem Bullock of North Brunswick was the lone athlete to win three events. He was victorious in the 100 (11.06), high jump (6-2) and long jump (23-2.5). The Scorpions also got wins from Arlyne Roberts (200 in 23.05), Aaron Layton (53.01) and the 4×100 relay.

Topsail’s Nathan Lau claimed the shot put with a distance of 42-3 and discus with a throw of 138-7. Brandon Parrella finished the 800 in 2:08 and the Pirates also won the 4×200 and 4×400 relays.
